Record Lathe Steady

Hi there
Just wondering if anyone can advise.
I have to do a number of 8 foot turnings for shop fronts (we have
done these before) fitting two lathes together (Record CL4 and Coronet 3) to get the length between centres. Originally I made a steady reasonably successfully to stop the whipping but it kept loosening I've unexpectedly got another larger batch to do so will need the steady again.
Just wondered if anyone knew where we might get a steady to fit onto a
Record lathe (Record don't make one themselves and Axminsters is too tall).
Be grateful of any thoughts folks may have.

Hi Clive, and welcome to the mad house. There are not many wood lathe steadies about, most people make their own using MDF / Steel angle and inline skate wheels. If you do a search o Google you will turn up loads of ideas. They don't take much time to knock up, as long as your not fussy what they look like.

Or you may be able to modify this to fit a record Dakota steady don't know how big it is but may fit your purpose.

The Robert Sorby centre steady will fit off the shelf but you need the correct size because it comes in 3 sizes due to lathe centre heights you need Sorby part number 761A for a Record lathe but it will only work for work between 1/8" - 4" diameter prices should be around £69.95

I was going to make a centre steady and was in the process of costing wheels etc when i saw that Charnwood were selling the Robert Sorby version for £49. (See here http://www.charnwood.net/shop/category/ ... tre-steady )
Ordered and delivered within 24 hours and it is a solid piece of kit, well pleased
