My whole plane collection (all 5) are vintage records. No 073 Shoulder Plane, Block Plane 60 1/2, No 5 1/2, No 4 and No 080 the last 2 still need restoring.
I'd like a No7 and a T5.
Record Collector, whats your thoughts on making new handles out of Cherry? I don't know what the original handles were made of.
Cherry would be a good substitute but rosewood was used by Record (C & J.Hampton)I think it was indian rosewood they used.

Yes - if you want to be historical, Rosewood would be the obvious choice.
But if you simply want a good handle, almost any hardwood will serve.
Darker colours are easier to live with, and you want diffuse porous.
Any of the Dalbergia family are very good, but walnut, cherry, maple, apple/pear would all work splendidly.
My own preference is for an oil/wax finish, although shellac (and later, varnish) is more authentic. But I'd rather touch wood than an applied finish.
