Hmmm. I wonder if it does that to me?

David's site is www.recordhandplanes.com and it's worth a visit if you're into Record planes.

Cheers, Vann

edit: ignore this - when I first read this it had **REPORT TO MODERATOR over the site link, but seems okay now.

Thanks for the link. Had a quick look, as I've got an old 1950's record no.6, that I'd brought back from its rusty days, and use it now at work all the time, it is super sharp! And to think it nearly went to car boot and probablu would have been given away for a quid!

I like it. I'll be bringing in my Record plane that I'm currently restoring (after a fashion) to see if I can work out the age using your site. :)

Erm, ah, hmmm... your site's all wrong it seems. Brought my plane in from the garage (the one I'm restoring) and it says "Stanley" on it. Not "Record"...

What a pity you have a Stanley I think everyone has a Stanley but not everyone has a Good Record Hand Plane, Made In Sheffield.

My whole plane collection (all 5) are vintage records. No 073 Shoulder Plane, Block Plane 60 1/2, No 5 1/2, No 4 and No 080 the last 2 still need restoring.

I'd like a No7 and a T5.

Record Collector, whats your thoughts on making new handles out of Cherry? I don't know what the original handles were made of.

Cherry would be a good substitute but rosewood was used by Record (C & J.Hampton)I think it was indian rosewood they used.

Yes - if you want to be historical, Rosewood would be the obvious choice.

But if you simply want a good handle, almost any hardwood will serve.

Darker colours are easier to live with, and you want diffuse porous.

Any of the Dalbergia family are very good, but walnut, cherry, maple, apple/pear would all work splendidly.

My own preference is for an oil/wax finish, although shellac (and later, varnish) is more authentic. But I'd rather touch wood than an applied finish.

G'Day I have made a few handles from different timbers One set I made was from Ebony and also from Queensland Walnut also called Black Walnut I have them on Planes I use in the workshop I do like the Ebony the best but very hard to work with. I made them a little thicker at 24mm rather than 22mm

I've made handles and knobs for a couple of Record planes from English Walnut which was quite easy to work with and looks half decent as well when done - Rob

I'm with BugBear in that I'd rather feel the wood under my hand not a hard varnish. Walnut sounds good, Rob do you have any pictures?
