I've had my CL4 VSLK lathe for almost 2 years and last weekend after turning for a couple of hours the lathe got louder and started 'knocking' as if the bearing was going ( the higher the speed the faster and louder the knock). I stripped, cleaned and adjusted the phosphor bronze bearing but it didn't solve the problem. I was beginning to think it was the main shaft bearing again (I had previously had to fit a new a one under warranty within the first two weeks), but it was actually the small single grub screw holding the shaft pulley set. The screw had worked slightly loose and as a result it was knocking in the slot.

Lesson is, check the tightness of those grub screws!

I had that with mine. Even when the second grub screw is thought to be nice and tight. Luck would have it I found the problem before taking the bearing apart.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Hi Dave.

Have had this problem myself, what I did is put a second grub screw on top of the first, if you have the length/depth of thread of course. It locks everything up and you won't have that problem again.

Just remember you have two locking screws for the future in case you have to take it apart again.
