Hi guys,

I started wood carving a few months back and am looking for a small bandsaw to cut out my work before I carve it. I'm not after a bandsaw that will cut in straight lines but am after a bandsaw for removing the waste before I carve it. I understand I need a thin blade for this but have no idea what bandsaw to go for.

I only carve small figures roughly 2-4" so don't need a huge bandsaw or anything special.

I don't have a massive budget either and am will to buy second if need be.

Many thanks

Is there a major difference between a 2 wheel bandsaw and a 3 wheel one?

in terms of the size that you are looking for, probably not a significant one. Most/many people are desparate for a machine that will cut straight, accurately, cut veneers from solid etc etc. But you primarily want something for hogging out waste.

When you get something, use tuffsaws for blades. Make sure that he is aware that it is a 3 wheeled machine, because some blades are more suitable than others because of the tighter bend.

The imp linked to above- there are many similar models out there, burgess, black and decker to name a couple, for 20 quid or so. They are actually very capable machines when set up right- there is a picture of jimi43 on the forum demonstrating accurately cutting a piece of rosewood on his which must be as good a test as most.
