That is one of the things i don't have is someone close by that can come to my shed and help me get a bit of experience. Last year i made friends with an older man that lived in my town. He is an experienced turner. We took turns going to each other's shed, on my part it was great. As i learned so much and had a good banter laughing at my mistakes.

unfortunately this has now stopped, as "Jimmy" does not turn anymore. As said i am only glad to be fit to turn and will keep on with learning by my mistakes, as most forum members have had to do. Yesterday was just a blip and a day of low feelings.

In the absence of a yes, I guess that's a 'no'.

looks like my 'world tour of Scotland' will be visiting pipe makers and box players (Fergie McDonald up in Acharacle).

Graham,
I feel that it would be unfair to get you to visit my shed, it is quite a long way off your return journey. I live in Girvan South Ayrshire. It is not that i do not appreciate your offer just guilt.

Came back here basically to read my own lecture and take heart from Shedhead's recent 'moment' ..

Been out to play since about 7 - and couldn't have turned soap.. couldn't put a decent edge on the tools, couldn't apply a basic wax finish properly and busted a rather nice bit of Padauk right out the jaws and watched it hurl its way 3/4's the way the length of the garage.

Back in, in an enormous big fat strop, growled at the dog, growled at the wife and basically chucked the teddies all out the cot :(

Ho hum. Sometimes I guess it just goes like that... much as I was preaching about earlier up the thread.
Serves me right probably.

Still nae just the happiest squirrell in the tree... but I'll get over it I suppose :(
Tomorrow's another day

Of the first, I have it in abundance

as for the light ...I'm still looking for the tunnel

Jenx, know what you are feeling like. I did have a better day the next day i returned to my turning. Although it was at this point i realised that i had so much to learn. And what i have learned so far, half of it is most likely not the correct way to do it. Thats why i feel i need the turning lessons.

In your own words " Stick with it " :D

if anyone with an M33x3.5 thread CHUCK wants to give up wood turning... then I think it's a really really good idea

It's soooo good to know I'm not alone.

I've shaved a good inch off my expensive Rbt Sorby fluted bowl gouge, trying to get a cutting edge on it and now, I can't even clamp me grinder efficiently to the bench. I also need tuition, but the nearest Blyth, is too far for me.

That's why you guys and this forum are such a comfort.

The weather wee are having I just get out and do things in the garden when I have a bad day on the lathe. In my case it is usually because I am thinking ahead too much and not concentrating on what I am doing. I want to see the finished product too quickly.

Today, all is ticketty-boo with the world !

I kinda knew what was bugging me .... sort of

That waste of money 8" Wide wheel record grinder.. well, the THIRD ONE.. was getting right on my wick, and ruining my gouges .. so its GONE.
Replaced with a cheapo Clarke 6", fitted with two white wheels... and
abracadabra !! Sharpening is 'as it should be' ... razor edges all round ( courtesy of much assistance from the Trugrind ).. no raggedy edges at all... just lovely sharp smooth-looking lovely steel !!!!

And one very very VERY happy novice :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

So happy in fact, that I even mucked out the Camvac, and treated its filters to a good meal of Persil Non-Bio in the Zanussi !
and she's suckin' like a fifty-dollar Hoo ... no no, cant say that in polite circles ! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Magic ! what a difference a day makes. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
