Re hello newby here

Greetings all. A good many years ago my greatest pleasure was woodturning but it stopped when we elected to leave the rat race and give up home ( and workshop) to travel the inland waterways on our narrowboat. This we still do and recently I have thought I could continue in a smaller way. This being so I have just ordered a FOX mini lathe and await with anticipation. I am staggered at the cost of the rest which I have yet to decide upon. It breaks my heart to think of all those lovely chucks and chisels I sold those years back. I would need a mortgage to replace them all now ...heh ho
Any advice about the most affordable bits would be recieved with gratitude. I have yet to decide on chisels and chucks etc. The boxed sets I have seen on line seem to have a reasonable range though I feel individuals would allow me just what I feel I need. What would be better would be to visit a retailer to peruse but where do I go? We are currently moored at Foxton Leicestershire and are dependent on public transport. Equally if any of you good people have bits for sale I may well be interested. Either way I am pleased to be here and look forward to learning afresh and of course getting into turning again. My workshop will have to be the towpath and the generator and of course fair weather.

If you can get to Nuneaton, Axminster have a store there which may give you some ideas.

Welcome to the forums.

I would say get a good chuck as a cheepo one could eave you with a wobble where they are not engineered well enough.

The axminster clubman chucks I have used and are suitable on a small lathe. The are well made and reasonably priced.

As for tools.

i would not buy a box set as the handles are gener all shorter although for smaller work this is not an issue.

the tools I use are Crown. the a very reasonably priced and are made of the same M2 HSS as the others ( bar a few other manufacturers).

So I would buy singles and as you say you can get what you need. However if you could get to a woodturning shop then you could have a look and see what is best for you.

Given that space is a major consideration I cannot consider a grind wheel, however I seem to recall one can obtain a grind wheel with a spigot at the back that can be mounted on/in the chuck. Not having any luck resourcing this either...any ideas please and thank you..Terry

Not a safe practice, to run a dry wheel at anything like a suitable speed to sharpen HSS tools puts it in the DANGEROUS animals category and should never be attempted without it is enclosed in a debris guard in an attempt to catch any exploding wheel. You also need a good firm controllable rest system if you are going to have any real control of bevel grinding.

Very expensive, but it might be the best answer in your situation would be the Sorby ProEdge belt grinder. being more suited to limited space and weight requirements for storing.

Did I just recommend spending that much money on a grinder :shock: :shock: :roll: ,, I think I personally would find some way of stowing a cheap bench grinder fitted with a good white wheel somewhere but practicality sometimes means money.

What sort of things did you used to turn :?:
I should think with a mini lathe that a box set would be suitable to do most things.Bowls,pens,etc.
I bought the Sorby set and do use all except the skew
Will look forward to seeing your workmand some piccys of you canalside turning

Terry, have a look at this thread linked in the Help & Safety sticky. It might give you something to go on, I would suggest that you then visit a couple of stockists and handle the tools to see which brand feels good in your hands, length and weight of handles does vary a lot and with your smaller lathe some of the monsters may be far to cumbersome.

Hi try T & J tools http://www.t-jtools.co.uk/

They do a brilliant diamond wheel that you can put into your chuck jaws. I use mine a lot and it gives a razor edge. I only run mine around 300 rpm and they will last much much longer than a grinding wheel.

You will need to practice the sharpening by hand bit which is not as easy as a jig. Although you could buy one and set up a system for use on the lathe.

Axminster obviously do internet sales and their help line is very good. You may find it easier once you know what you want to order it over the phone.

If I was starting again I would go for.

1 x 3/8, 10 mm bowl gouge.
1 x 1 inch 25mm spindle rouging gouge.
1 x 1/4 in 6 mm spindle gouge
1 x 3/8 in 10 mm spindle gouge
1 x 1 in 25mm square end scraper
1 x 1 in 25mm round nose scraper
1 x 1/th in 3 mm parting tool
1 x 1/4 inch 6mm parting tool
1 x 1/2 in 12mm skew ( some prefer one that is of flat bar profile but the top and bottom faces of the tool are rounded as I find for me that it is easier to use.)

This is all I use on a daily basis apart from hollowing tools.

For supplies you can also go here and Richard is very helpful and will tell you what you need ( he will be able to advice you on the best skew as well for your needs, although I do not believe at this time he sells tools.)

Hi peter, have moored a number of times in Cropredy since we are both very keen on the South Oxford Canal. Not sure when we can get down there again though. Spent all the summer as seasonal Lock-keeper Watford locks and are now hanging around the Foxton area to see how the winter looks to be shaping up but ulitmately with the hope of re-employ again at Watford next season.
Fishing at Cropredy was amazing just above the lock opporsite those houses there.

Regards my style of turning, rather difficult to describe as my style is very rustic but when I can master the photo posting ( and get some stuff made!!!!) I will submit some efforts. My main interest is Mushrooms( hence "shroom"!!!) and fruit. Years back I did very well with it at Craft Fairs.

The Fox mini lathe is pretty small so you should be able to clamp a board onto a workmate and have room for the lathe and a grinder next to it. Alternatively, sharpen your tools before a session, that alone should be enough as you will be turning smaller things on that lathe anyway and so they won't be getting blunt quickly unless you are using oak and the like. An interesting excercise, extreme minimization :lol:
