Re-grinding Planer Blades

I've taken a nick out of one of my P/T blades and it needs a re-grind. Not something I am set up to do myself, so I will need to use a sharpening service.

Is it best to use a specialist, and can anyone recommend a name? Or, should I just try the local hardware store that does my shears and secateurs??

If they are disposable blades then they are likely to be two sided so turn them over and use the new edge.
If they are re-sharpenable blades then find a saw doctor. I lightly (and carefully hone my own if not too bad. If the blades are merely clamped and do not have fixings that engage in holes, you can off-set the blades by say a mm so that you do not leave ridges in the work. i.e set one blade 1mm to the right and one blade 1mm to the left. Manually check for clearance before turning on.
If both blades are nicked this will still work but ideally you will need a re-grind.
Buy a spare set so that you use one set whilst the other is being re-sharpened.

Hi,

I use my local tool store...Wokingham Tools...they charge me 25p per inch and it takes a for them to send them out to a local company and get them back. I've been very pleased with the service.

I'm sure you will be able to get a similar service where you live. BY the way you need to invest a bit by buying a second pair of blades so that there is always a sharp set available.

Aldel, Beech - thanks for the advice; I have now checked with my local tool/building services store and it has the same arrangement with a sharpening service so I have sent the blades away.

By coincidence, I ordered a spare pair of blades the week before I damaged the originals - my crystal ball was obviously working.

For anyone faced with the same problem, this is obviously a fairly standard service in most areas and works well. The blades are collected from the store one day (Wednesday in my case) and returned a week later. Cost me £5 per blade, which seems reasonable.
