HC is dead right. In addition, the butts are irrelevant in terms of water movement from the roof. Once they are full the water will still need to go to a surface water drainage system designed exactly the same as if the butts weren't there.

hi

thanks mike , i did mine that way for several reasons as shown in my web link, with the linked pipes all at the same level as the overflow so when it rained even if it was just a small drizzle the overflow came into play immediately , as the water then flowed on into the the other barrels and finally into the overflow so all barrels were getting refreshed as and when it rained throughout the year .

For the dry weather (not that we have any nowadays) I wish i had also but a second link pipe to all barrels just above all the outlet taps at the base of barrels so if i opened any of the taps for watering purposes all barrels drained to the same level so in long hot periods i don't end up with some empty barrels and some still full and going stagnant in the heat .

A small project for early spring perhaps hc

Thanks Mike - originally I thought of putting in one of the newer generation of plastic type of soakaways. Seems I may have to put that in anyway.

I do fancy using the water to flush the toilets in the house.

Out of curisoity - what about a submersible pump and float switch that pumps water up and into the stormdrains. Either float switch operated and\or manual.

I suppose I'd better work out the roof areas, etc. and get an idea of possible volumes.

Whilst I only intend to fit 3 IBC's (3m3) there is space for double that.
