A red Lens Rail Lantern, yes it is bent, very rusty and missing a bit.
The tank and burner, but fear not.
I have a spare.
Caustic soda had the paint removed, citric acid did for the rust.
A wash off and a dry and we have the paint going on.
Yes I left the dent in. Pulling it out was beginning to tear other joints, as the metal had streached.
Why red, when most lanterns of this style are white?
It is has a pressed BR logo, but now hidden in the paint it is stamped GPO.
It dates from the time that BR rn mail trains. So this lantern was not to be mixed up with other rolling stock equipment.
It was only after paint was applied that I found out the GPO should of been filled with Black wax.

Why not add a bitt of gold leaf.
