You can do your (across the grain) rebate in exactly the same way.

That video's well worth watching as a reminder of what a versatile tool the chisel is, and how quick such splitting can be. Very interesting. The original question was about a very shallow rebate (only 1/16th of an inch) across the breadth of a board though - so maybe not the easiest cut to apply this technique to.
