You could stack 6mm ply rough cut blanks 4 or 6 deep and trim them to a template on the router table, the make them rustic with dark stain and a rotary wire brush [but not at the same time....messy]

I was in 'The Works' looking at kids craft stuff the other day, and they had wooden hearts, about coaster sized, £1 for a pack... think it was 4 or 5 in a pack...

Just had search for them... and found big packs...
