just as an update to this, he got a call from this 'private' number which it turns out to be his wifes boyfriend, baldheaded goes to the gym type chap we all know and love, however he phoned and started to threaten him if he carried on hassling his own wife, which was only him asking when he can see the kids, he reported this threat to the police who came to my house to take a statement from him and she then phoned my friends wife and asked her for her boyfriends phone number, she obviously denied she had his number so now the police cant do anything, its nice to have someone to rely on when threats to your life are being made, where's the justice nowadays..

They can definitely get the number from your friends phone provider. I've got a mate who is an investigator with what used to be serious organised crime (now some new agency that I forget) and he is regularly getting phones traced including where the phone was when it made a call etc (all from cell site triangulation) so they can definitely help and he should push hard with the police. If he still doesn't get anywhere then ask to speak to an inspector and see where he gets then. I'm sure they will help. Nobody should feel threatened or intimidated.

But is it selective or just block all numbers that have been withheld? If the latter then not very helpful for those like us who have their home phone number withheld.

It blocks all withheld numbers, if you set it to that. Or you can specify numbers to block, which I think most phones probably do nowadays. The scumbag calls SWIMBO was getting were all withheld numbers (aren't scumbags brave!), so we blocked all.

If someone wants to withhold their number, that's fine, but then they shouldn't complain if their call goes unanswered.

I can understand where you are coming from but our landline is number withheld. So if SWMBO calls me on the mobile, she would be blocked.

Mmmmmm....there's a thought.

Thinking a bit more about it, there are quite a few companies that are number withheld. And the local hospital. The GP surgery. TBH on my scale I can put up with the infrequent number withhelds.

If someone is phoning from a network, say for instance a hospital or council building, it will come up as unknown number. I am constantly plagued by the ppi etc cold callers but as I am in business and have some very large companies as customers I cant block them. I use a Blackberry z10 and don't even know if I can block certain numbers that repeatedly phone me. Will need to check that one out.

If your good lady dials 141 then your number, it will do a one-time release of the number withold option - basically, 141 reverses the 'polarity' - so you can do a 'withold' if your phone number is normally delivered.

Hope that make sense.

A great tip, thanks, Greg but I must be doing something wrong as I just tried it and it still came through as private number.

It could be that your provider blocks it at source, rather than on delivery. I have heard of that happening. I'll ask about to see if there is a solution.

I have just come into this.

The police can definitely get the phone number from your service provider, and they should do.

But

Have you tried your service provider? Supply them with the crime reference number and the contact details of the investigating officer and get them together.

Just a thought.

Are you talking BT (who I tried this with) or a mobile provider ...just a thought.
