Hi I have a mate going through a separation ATM and he keeps getting someone ringing him from a private number, when he tries to phone back there is no number there to return the call, is it possible to find out who it is that keeps ringing at weird hours of the night?

Ps this is on a mobile btw..

He could download the app Sweet Dreams. It allows you to set silent periods, say 11 til 6. It doesn't stop them calling but at least the phone doesn't ring and disturb your sleep.
It's a free app.

I know it's possible to arrange with your provider to block all callers who withhold their number but don't know if this can be done on a mobile 'phone.

Just be carefull on this one, my bank for instance comes up as a private caller.

tap the number into google and see what comes up.... i've done it before after receiving calls from an 'unknown' (to me) number.... turned out to be from a GoCompare insurance provider when i did a car insurance quote from my ipad. So i blocked it... simples... :D

My bank is on my unwelcome list anyway. I was getting so many calls pretending to offer something in my interest, when they were really trying to sell something, that I wrote to the bank manager and told him to stop the calls. It took three letters but they did eventually give up.

If it's an Android, try the Mr Numbers app.

I'm no mobile phone techy (I don't even own one) but SWMBO was getting scumbag calls on her mobile with with-held numbers and this sorted it. So what if the bank couldn't get through. They only ever called with bad news or trying to sell us rubbish we didn't want.

No doubt they tried to charge you for reading three letters

I just turn my phone off at night Steve. Mind you, the last time I tried to download an app, it wouldn't work. Enquiries with 02 proved that it might be good idea to terminate the contract once the two years are up.

If it's an iPhone set it to do not disturb. You can then select who's calls make the phone ring so they can contact you in the event of and emergency. Your friends service provider can obtain the number of the private caller even if he doesn't answer the phone.

Sorry to butt in on this, but does anyone know if it's possible to download anything such as Mr Number for a router? Our house phone is a VOIP phone through our router and although we are on what the French call 'List Rouge', not in the book, etc., we still get cold calls from clowns trying to sell solar/wind turbines/insurance/etc.

The router is an Orange Livebox.

I'd be very surprised if any router would do this. Can't whoever converts the incoming call to VOIP for you help?

There is no need for Mr Number on my Android as it already offers a Reject Call list facility which is what Mr Number does. Mr Number can't handle NumberWithheld and neither can the Reject Call List. A loud whistle down the phone is usually best.

Roger. Blocking Number Withheld is what it does. Very well!

I too doubt there is a way of doing it, but we get so miffed by the cold calls from so called partners of EDF and god knows who else even although we are 'liste rouge'.

I sometimes answer in my very best English and that confuses, sometimes telling them the number is liste rouge and ask why they are calling it, sometimes I am renting and sometimes just asking them to hold while I find the boss man, put the phone down and put it back on the 'hook' after about 20 mns..

I feel a call to the English help line coming on though??

But is it selective or just block all numbers that have been withheld? If the latter then not very helpful for those like us who have their home phone number withheld.

We get a number of these calls as well, however, the solution for us is as follows;

The phone can be programmed such that numbers in the phone's directory have a different ring tone, so that when someone you know calls, you can answer it. Anything else has a standard ring and is left to go to the answerphone, or usually not, if it's a cold call.

Would that work for you?

The iPhone will let you only receive calls from known number at times you specify so for example (as said above) you can have it set to not accept calls from say 11pm to 8am unless they are on your favourites list. This is useful if you are worried about relatives or children etc so they can call you anytime but others cannot. In addition I would contact the phone provider and if that is no help then ofcom and last resort the police.
