Precision square, where from?

I actually tried the ones from Toolstation and it's pot luck. Some are spot on, others are waaaaay off. So at that price, it's more likely that they're out more than they're square. I'd expect Axminster to be more trustworthy though. Do post back with your results. Honestly, £20 is on the (very) cheap side for a 10" engineers square, so don't be surprised if its out.

While we're on the subject. I don't understand why they don't just mill out these squares from solid metal. Surely the accuracy is there?... and possibly cheaper?

Probably not cheaper in fact, it would be much slower. And although the milling would be accurate, if there is any residual stress in the metal (from rolling, for example), it could warp and not be 90 deg after you stop machining.

Question is how can a class 1 be worse than a class 2 regardless of price?

The ones that were off were off by a mile, so I'd say it's simply false advertising. Either they have made a mistake, or they've done it on purpose .. who knows.

The nice thing about the Axminster store's is you can pick out your square off the shelf and check it against one of the mitre slots on a cast iron table to a bandsaw or similar, put it on one side, turn it over and check again, keep doing it until you find a good one, perhaps I was lucky and picked the good ones immediatly.

I wish I lived close to one. Lovely stores.

I bought 3 from Toolstation, 100, 150 and 200mm and my heart sank when they arrived and I opened the box. I just sat there looking at 3 blue labels that said SILVERLINE and said out loud "They are going back".

So I switched on the computer to arrange the return of the squares. While waiting for the computer to boot up I decided to check the squares against my two good squares. One is a Kinex 150mm flat square and the other a Kinex 200mm Precision try square, both DIN 875/2. To my surprise all three Silverline squares were spot on, I was amazed and checked each one about six times. I did notice on the label it says "manufactured according to BS 939:2007".

I kept them and use them all the time and I'm very happy with them. £16.33 including next day delivery for all three was a real bargain in my opinion.

Good to hear. Are they still square?

Yes, just checked them and they are still square. However, I should point out that I've only had them a week or so.

Closest one is Nuneaton but I'm going to order online.

Think I'm going to bite the bullet on this one, it conforms to the Din standard and for under £20.

Let me know if I should opt for something else

I've just bought one of these a few days ago and have set all my other squares to it, I'm very happy with the results.... but musicmans jig looks excellent as well.

Musicman... maybe squaring squares could be a sideline for you ?? seems to be a lot of duff ones out there :)
