I'm on a business trip to the US at the moment and decided to avail myself of the lower prices over here and treat myself to a pre-Christmas present.

After reading Alf's excellent write-up I decided on a Veritas Low Angle Smoother, $200 delivered from Lee Valley.

At the moment it's sitting in its box looking at me and I have to keep picking it up and handling it!!

I thought about trying it out on the hotel furniture but decided against it!! I'll have to wait 'till the weekend when I'm back.

I think this qualifies as a gloat and the only allowed response is "you suck" but that's just because we're envious...

Congratulations on a good purchase!

A couple of years ago I bought a refurbished Stanley scrub plane from the USA (with Hock). When it arrived I was sitting in the garden. I opened it, looked at it and put it on the (wooden) garden table. My wife asked to look at it and I pushed it across the table to her...

Takes a lovely big shaving.

Perhaps take a couple of shavings off the back of the hotel headboard - that way the item is truly 'used' therefore legally avoiding the clutching hands on Mr Brown's lot as you sail through customs with a clear conscience.

Funny you should mention that!!

The corner of the desk in my room had a slightly rough corner where it had be bumped by something, probably the cleaners.

Not any more..................................
