I was absolutely horrified yesterday when I heard about the police dogs that had died after being left in a handlers vehicle on Sunday - but today when I found out that it was the same handler whos dogs died a couple of years ago for the same reason I just feel sick

This copper should be locked up and the key thrown away - This is a disgrace!!!

Didn't realise the guy already had form for the same thing!

Whoever allowed him to continue working with dogs needs a good kicking as well!!

Where did you see it was the same handler as the previous case? As far as I have seen the handler in this case hasn't been named.

Read the posts in the link - Jeremy Vine also stated that on Radio 2 this afternoon

It is appalling, without question, but I am not drawing the conclusion that it was the same handler from anything that I have read.

Must admit I didn't read the comments under the first linked article - I tend to find these generally unhelpful - but a bit of googling does seem to indicate this is the second time that the officer in question has been in this situation. You would have thought that once in a lifetime would be horrific enough to leave an indelible impression on him.

If it were you or I committing this despicable act we would be locked up, he should be dismissed and whoever allowed him a second chance should be demoted.

Same guy... Yes. Hate to admit it but I read it today in The Sun. (not mine!! I browsed it in the staff canteen while getting a cuppa)

Worse though... between the 1st and 2nd incidents he was promoted!!!

There appears to be some confusion here... from what I can make out this is the second time this bloke has allowed this to happen but, it is not the same bloke who left two dogs to die in the back of his patrol car last year(?).

Sure, its a pretty ****** thing, but come on - lock him up and throw away the key???????? I think a reality check is in order. They are only dogs, it's not like it was small children. I think if you really loved animals you wouldn't keep one as a pet.

Thats how I read it - you would have thought professional dog handlers would be more aware than anybody of the consequences.

Indeed, especially having done the same thing previously. The only 'mitigating' circumstances that I can think of is that it can take less than twenty minutes for it to happen. I can see myself doing something that 'will only take a minute' and easily get distracted for far longer than that.

Well done, you have mastered selective quoting.

What were the circumstances that led to the police officer to leave the dogs in the car?

A quick scan of the posts above suggest that it's not clear cut as to whether the police officer is the one which had allowed this to happen before.

Locking someone up and throwing away the key is not a punishment that is handed out to rapists, peadophiles, murderers - yet you want that sentence to given to someone who has allowed, for reasons as yet unknown, to let a couple of dogs die in a car.

Like I said, reality check required.

That's right Mr S. He Sergeant Craven murdered 2 of them on Sunday and he did the same to a spaniel in 2004, after which instead of being punished he was promoted to a top job in their newly built dog training school. The other Nottingham based copper that you are talking about is PC Mark Johnson who killed 2 dogs last year.

When you think that these dogs are trained to take the bullet so to speak and protect their handler, it's a f-ing sad fact that a dog is just another bit of equipment to some police officers, and if it breaks they just get another one.
The trouble is even if the full force of the law is brought to bare on this copper, the most he can be given is 51 weeks in jail.

The circumstances are That he Sergeant Craven left the two dogs to die in a sweat box on the hottest day of the year while he went from the training school in Kent to (in a different vehicle) Olympic site in London

Yes in 2004, and another officer did the same to two dogs last year

Cheers

Mike

Thanks for clearing up sone of the facts Mike. Are you saying he got promoted as a result of the first incident?

I'm sure that I read they found this guy after a failed suicide attempt after the dogs died.

51 weeks seems like a long sentence to me. I squashed a fly once, should I get 51 weeks?

That makes it OK then! We (tax payers) pay this mans wages.

No, no, no - whats wrong with you people?????? Whats with the selective quoting????

They are only dogs, therefore, you wouldn't expect a punishment that is applicable to the treatment of humans - would you?
