hi

sorry about the dramatic title but was unsure of how to title what it was i wanted to ask. I am new to ukworkshop forum so i will hopefully get in to the swing of it soon.

My question is, I have got a customer who wants me to make him a new mantle piece. He wants it to be made out of solid oak but he wants it to match his table, chairs and other furniture that he bought from Oak Furniture Land which ironically is not Oak, it is made from Mango. Oak Furniture Land sell a wax and in the description says the table is treated with wax so im assuming it is the same. Could any one tell me if i was to use this wax would it make the Oak i buy match the Mango furniture?

thanks for any advice.

thanks for the reply. do you have any advice on how i could match this furniture? as i have been informed you cant get mango wood here.

With great difficulty, if its the stuff that the british heart foundation sell its ugly as sin!

By the sound of it this probably isn't worth your time unless the client is paying for your time spent sourcing it. most of this furniture is made far away so even buying timber from the manufactures will prove difficult, maybe find a cheap table on ebay, gumtree, facebook etc with similar grain and cut the top into constructional veneers. And make a new table top out of pine and sell it on?

give capital crispens a call they have some pretty amazing veneer maybe they could help.

I had never heard of Mango wood before reading your post so had a look on google images. Looking at the pieces on there I would say your best bet to get a match if you cant get Mango is to use satin birch, olive wood or even beech with the right stain would give you a closer match than Oak.

The wax you talk of is probably a maintenance wax, I doubt it would alter any timber to match it in to Mango. You would always be better off getting the match with stain and then sealing with a clear finishing product.

You could also try these people http://www.exotichardwoodsukltd.com/

I have just done the same and Googled mango wood furniture.

In my living room I have some birch furniture and some oak furniture they are a similar colour although the oak is a little lighter.

The birch does also look a little like your mango wood but has not got the large swirls.

As an experiment would you consider trying some birch ply for the body and edging it with solid birch to make it look solid?

Would be cheaper especially in time I think.

If it were me I may make up a sample piece just to see if it can match.

I am a amateur so feel free to ignore me in favour of someone who earns their living at this stuff.

Good luck.

Adidat, Mrpercysnodgrass and Mickcheese thanks for taking the time to reply, i will give all ideas a look into and keep you posted how i get on. Cheers.

I once quote for a job where the clients wanted a custom drinks cabinet made from mango wood and zebrano. I maybe didn't get it because they saw me wince when they were describing what they wanted....
