I recently won a 2kw electric motor that came as a box of bits ! The bearings were away but that was easy to address as was the general assembly.

However as is always the way of things, having put the casing back together with the new bearings I found in the bottom of the box 2 bearing diameter (~50mm) crinkly spring washers some 4mm wide. Take to pieces - assess that these would fit in the bearing housing in the end plates behind the bearings - reassemble, and then realise, lying in bed this morning, that perhaps these washers are some sort of thrust washer and should in fact be between the bearing and the rotor.

Opinions please.

Rob:

Typically those wavy washers go between the bearing and the housing. They allow the rotor to expand lengthwise when it heats up under use. Most motors have them at one end, though I've seen one or two that had them in both ends.

Sorry I was late Rob!!

I fully concur with what Kirk has said.

I've seen two fitted at one end on occasions and assumed that this was an assembly error. In your case Rob, I'd stick one in each end and make a mental note to make notes/draw a diagram/take photos next time you take anything to pieces.

Many thanks guys. That means I can leave it as it is thank goodness.

Bob, this was an 'Ikea' kit of parts without the diagrams for assembly. It came off the wood working club's Sheppach bandsaw, went to a motor repair shop who advised BER, so the club bought a new one and I collected the dismantled motor from the repair shop - as it was only a fiver for new bearings and I certainly don't want the burnt out brake, I'll just keep quiet about the fact that I anticipate being able to get it running. Reward for the time I took doing the repair - and all the others I'm mug enough to admit being able to do.

Rob,

I would advise that you do fit the rings as they will define the position of the shaft and hence pulley. Without the rings the pulley position can drift with time and wear prematurely.

Apologies for the egg sucking suggestions earlier.
