I have an 8x4 trailer which is now old enough to need the ply bed replacing. Current phenolic ply base has been Ok for a good 12 years.

Replacement phenolic ply seems very hit and miss. Much of the lower cost stuff is phenolic resin on cheap Chinese ply and not desirable at all. The more expensive stuff is about £90 but is impossible to get to the point where the supplier can tell me what sort of ply has been used. Being a sceptical sort this lack of knowledge does not impress me at all.

An alternative is to use Ali chequer plate at about the £90 + price. BUT what thickness do I need. ?? The 2 or 3 mm thick stuff just seems too thin to support a maximum of 750Kg with that weight spread across the 8x4 surface so do I need to go to say 4 or 6 mm instead or am I worrying about nothing.

Anyone know about these things.

I've got an Ifor Williams 8x4 twin axle GD4 which has a payload of 2 tonnes and I replaced mine with 12mm ply, undersealed before I fitted it and 3mm chequerplate on top with silicone to all joints. My chequerplate was in 3 sections as it was free offcuts otherwise I'd definitely buy a sheet as it makes cleaning with a pressure washer simple to do.
3mm chequerplate would possibly be ok on its' own to carry only 750kg but Id still probably use ply under if I were doing it for a few quid extra.
