Is all commercial pearwood only available steamed, or is it available unsteamed?

Anybody know of a northern supplier- I am after a small (6ft) wide (10") board, sufficient to make a bracket clock from in the summer. I would like to get it acclimatizing now in the house. There is some flexibility with the size, I havent worked out a full cutting list yet.

Long shot- anybody got any that they want to sell?

Mark

You'll find Pear in smaller yards that's been locally felled and isn't steamed, but the better quality central European stuff in the bigger yards is generally steamed. Personally I'd stay away from the grubbed up orchard stuff that you see from time to time, by and large it's pretty rubbish.

If you can't find anything near you then PM me when you've got a final cutting list and I'll see what I can do. Incidentally, you often get bark inclusions with Pear so wastage can run quite high.

ah, thanks for the tip, Custard. I will bear the wastage in mind and avoid the grubbed up stuff.

Timberline keeps Swiss Pear in stock and I think they'll post smaller orders,

Last time I looked at their stocks the 1" boards had been well picked over but there were excellent quality 2" waney edged boards and I bought a few for stock, I've a feeling they've had subsequent deliveries of Pear but I didn't look through it.

Have you any experience with letting them select boards on your behalf? I am a bit reluctant to do that when wastage can already be high and if the boards have already been picked over several times

Where is Timberline? I assume it's near Custard but I only see Kent and thought Custard lived not too far from me in Hampshire?
