Hi

First post

I live near Burton On Trent in Staffordshire and im looking to particiapte in a part time 8-12 weeks evenings course at a college or similar.

Im a 30 year old male with a full time job, im very interested in woodworking and dream one day of making furniture for our house.

I have made the basics with a powered mitre saw ie decking, pergolas, garden benches, garden planters etc but i would like to learn much more.

So what is the best way to go about this?? I want to start a the very beginning, and learn joints, using a router, planer, table saw etc and start making some basic items for indoors.

Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,

I'll be watching this very closely for, fingers crossed, some good suggestions. I grew up in Burton and now live over in Hilton, so still very very close.

Burton College used to do this but now i cannot seem to lay my hands on the info. Not sure if Derby College or Coalville (Stephenson) college do anything like this. As for local cabinet makers the only one i know of is a little place in Tutbury (Which i cannot remember the name of). Burton College used to do evening 'classes' once a week in the wood shops which were basically, teach you the H&S, offer advice, and the rest was up to you. Basically just rented the shops out. Not sure if they still do that.

At the local tech (Burton) there is this course offered in the part time offerings

Non Vocational Wood Occupations L1 1 3hrs x 10wks Thu eve TBC 06.09.12 04.07.13 180 N/A No P10917

I used to live in Rolleston, its a small world !!!

I have done some searching, ive looked on south staffs college website showing four local colleges but the only carpentry one i can see are full time and a diploma.

I dont really want to just pay and go somewhere and be left to my own devices, i want someone to teach me/ show me and give us projects etc

I think the Non Vocational Wood Occupations is maybe looking at 2nd fix joinery. you could always ask for a syllabus from them to see........

What sort of items are you looking to make? There are loads of videos and books that go into good details but its not like someone putting you right if you are struggling!

Just remembered, there was a furniture restoration and apostorary (Spelling???) course held at Hatton Village Hall Once a week...... not sure where i have stored that info but i can look for you......
