Oysters

.... no, - not those gopping fish thingies!

I've got a small lignum 'log' and the only real use I can think of is a few oysters. It's many years old and as dry as a bone so I have no worries on that score.

Is it best to cut straight across or on the diagonal? I'm inclined to cut straight as this would provide best use of a limited resource (only about 6 inches long). I'm thinking about 3 mm thick which I understand to be about right.

Any thoughts?

You can do either I believe, depending on the effect that you want. 90degrees will give you circles, 45 degrees more oval. I forget where I read about it but there are some good things online about the technique, also YouTube is worth a look.

I would find a piece of something else to test your idea with before you commit your limited supply of lignum. As you say, with a short piece, straight across sounds the best bet.
