I am not a big photographer by any means, but like to think I don't do too bad. All pics taken with a pointy shooty Canon Ixus 60.

Llama (or Alpaca, not sure) who used to live in the field at the bottom of my garden.

Thanks

You can get great pics with point and shoot these days.

Very true. One thing I learnt recently is that, on Flickr, you can browse through photos that other people have taken using an identical model to your own. All I learned is that I have an awful lot to learn about using my 'cheap' camera!

:)

(The focus was just off here. Am I right in saying it's the DOF that's the problem? What setting on the camera would I have to play with to get that right? Just the focus?)

Some lovely photos being posted here. The vast majority worthy of being published or framed.

Looks like Woodworking and Photography are linked in the psyche some how?

Hi, wizer

Close ups are difficult to do you need a small aperture to get good DoF but then you have a long exposure which can lead to camera shake, try using the flash to freeze things, and take lots of shots.

Cheers Pete. That was taken about 6yrs ago and I can't remember if I was using the tripod. Probably not. Must get that lens out and have a play.

I love the Green Shoots shot.

I agree with pete in principal but my opinion is that its not a DoF problem so much as that the focus has locked on to the wrong thing - there is plenty of foreground in focus and the shoulder of the cricket is in focus but the heads a bit soft

so you needed to put the active focus point over the head/eye which would have resulted in less in focus fore ground but the cricket itself being on the plane of focus.

the other thing that maximises the DoF is to keep the sensor/film plane parallel with the subject - if it is at an angle you will get a smaller band of focus and thus focusing will need to be that much more accurate
