"The test driver made the claim, not the owner of the car."

I am a bit confused by this because all the Fully Comprehensive insurance policies I've ever had only covered me under a Third Party agreement if I was driving someone else's car so, my understanding of comprehensive insurance would suggest that the only thing covered by the 'test drivers' insurance would have been the telegraph pole he hit and it was up to him to fix the car he was testing. Unless - he had a comprehensive insurance policy for any car he might drive but here I have another problem - any time I have asked for that level of cover I was told it was not an option I could buy because it was not available.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Beats me as well. On second thoughts, dealers insurance?

Looks like my next bonus is on hold while we pay this claim.

I was a bit surprised that it was Aviva as we normally only go for middle of the road stuff (sorry no pun intended).

Aviva do have some specialist brokages which is what this was probably what this was covered under.

one wonders if he was driving responsibly and inside the speed limit at the time

Be very careful to check the small print of your policy as for some time now the major insurance companies at least have dropped the facility which allowed the policy holder to drive another vehicle under a 3rd party cover.
This was never a right but regarded as a "perk" of a comprehensive policy in the past.

my information comes from a very reliable source within Aviva / Norwich Union.

Any additional cover must now be arranged and paid for. As far as I know.

Thanks Bob,

I will definitely check this because I have just changed insurer after many years (and no accidents or convictions) with the same company who couldn't touch the cost of equivalent cover for our two cars with Admiral. When I was setting the policies up I asked about 5 million questions about the policy I was buying to make sure I was getting what I wanted but I really should have had more than a cursory glance at the documents when they arrived.

Better to be sure than make assumptions that I did get what I thought I paid for.

Brendan.
