Larger aperture should help a lot though. f/1.8 sounds like a 50mm lens (I did ask what lens you're using...). That's a bit wide (short focal length) for what you want to do. I'd use a 135mm at a minimum, but the longer the better within reason.
Sorry yes didn't read - I saw fast and thought large aperture. It is 50/1.8 as you said. I've got a zoom 80/200 so will try that next.

erewego with the window open. 2 fieldfares half an hour ago. Not bad but could be better it's a dull old day.
Every shot through the glass has been hopeless so I'll put in a piece of float when the weather improves.

Another go through open window with zoom lens 80 - 200.
Basically I need a bigger lens but a tripod will help I guess.
Obviously going to have to work at it. Mind you it's dull out there and starting to snow.

using a polarising filter will remove the reflections, but you can only use them on DSLRs and better cameras, what camera are you using?

We had - and used - polarising filters long afore we had digital cameras.

You can minimise reflections by pressing the lens right upto the window. Another trick we used when photographing subjects in aquariums and the like was poke the lens through a hole in some black card.
