Hi Folks
Thought you might be interested in a plane I just picked up. It needs a little TLC - actually, it needs a LOT!
It's a Norris A5 and it will be getting the "Philly" treatment over the coming weeks. I'm keeping a photo diary here....

Looks like it could be a good project.

I presume from the photo that it doesn't have blade with it - are you going to make your own?

What are you going to do with the handles - refurb or replace?

Cheers

I've just been nosing into the infill - it is rotten to the core so it will be replaced. Think I might have a bit of Rosewood somewhere
The iron is missing and I hope to get a original replacement from a friend. And I'm going to make a new adjuster (he says bravely  )
Stay tuned,
Philly :D

I've been scared to bring the norris into the workshop. Removed the infills this morning- just finished vacuuming up every bit of sawdust in the shop. And all the remaining bits of infill are living in a sealed ice cream tub outside for reference.

Worm and fire are my two great terrors.

Cheers Mike

Phew - don't blame you.

I was petrified when I saw some little beasties run away when I was heat bending some mandolin sides - happily they were in the bending form, which got baked at Gas Mark 7 for two hours, and the rest of the stock from whence it came was thrown out post haste.

Think the little blighters have an eighteen month-ish life cycle, and haven't seen anything for a couple of years now, but was scary regularly checking at my pile of mango, koa, tasmanian blackwood, coco, eirw, brw, indian satinwood, walnuts, cherry...

So, is it finished yet?

looks like a lot of work there Philly, but having used Waka's Norris, it'll be well worth it

Phil,

I suggest you email Konrad - he'll be glad to offer a few tips on fitting the infill I'm sure. You'll certainly want to use a wood with the smallest possible movement.

Philly - great project. I think the most tricky bit will be making the spindle for the adjuster, cleaning up the metalwork and replacing the infills will be time consuming but doable. Will be following progress closely  :D - Rob

Thanks Gents!
Chris - needless to say, Konrad will be receiving some emails from me. And not for orders
Derek - thanks for that, it all helps!
Rob - I have some plans for an adjuster, just need to get stuck in. Don;t fancy popping round with your "plane polishing kit" do you?

The shell is in the "bath" having some electrolysis. Pics soon.
Cheers

Phill - it's just called 'elbow of the grease' ...will ring after 6.00pm and T - Rob

A quick update.........
There was a lot of rust in this thing - a LOT!
After taking advice from a certain planemaker I have knocked out the remaining crosspins and removed the screw cap. This will allow me to get rid of any remaining rust and also true up the bed and mouth easier.
If I can get some time I will start fitting the infills this weekend. And then I can start putting the thing back together.
Oh, and if anyone has a suitable iron they wouldn't mind parting with drop me a PM.
Best regards
Philly :D
