i have to make a side unit for someone. The idea was drawer units to each end and a flip down door to the middle. This will give access to the dvd player and sky box but you have to have the door down to use it.

What i'm after, is a device that can be placed on the underside of the side unit, capture the remote control signal and send the signal to the dvd/sky box so i can have the flip down door shut. Do you know what i mean???

Is there anything like that available or is it something that someone could make?? I may be looking at the solution for a media wall coming up.

Hmm. I'm pretty sure there is a gizmo. I saw it advertised the other day but I can't remember what or where cos I was looking for something else. I expect someone'll be along in a minute and trump me!

you might want to ask over at AV Forums for more users with personal experience

I was in B+Q looking at a device-called an IR extender. Should be just what you want. Was cheap9ish) too, if I remember.

Thanks for the links people. I'm glad i wasn't dreaming this up, sure beats the blacked out glass unit i have from Ikea

To control the DVD, Stereo, Sky, Cable, etc you basically need an IR Repeater. Something that will take the IR signal, then carry it to a transmitter inside the cabinet and blast it at the STB's. What Les has suggested will work, but only for one STB. It plugs into the ariel port of the STB. Therefore you'd need one for each STB which is not ideal.

WiZeR

firstly, whats STB's   :?

They have only the dvd and sky+ boxes as they want the bose system on display  Will this not be the easy solution, just to extend each item.

Has anyone use these, as i don't want it controlling next doors sky box as well.

Andy

STB: Set Top Box

AFAIK you can not use those extenders with a DVD player. I may be wrong, I have never really looked into it.

Andy,

Andy Boyd used something like this on his TV Cabinet - somewhere on here he gave more details about it I think?

Cheers,
Neil

<edit> crossed over with WiZeR there - must learn to type faster!

Andy,

According to the blurb on the maplin site, that yoke should work for all your gear - I thought like Wizer that they workend for Set top Bokes only, but apparently not!

Les

I stand corrected.

I'd be interested to hear how AndyBoyd got on with his solution

Hi,

I have all my AV equipment in a closed cabinet (looks much more tider) and have of course had to use an IR extender.

I went for this one, http://www.gadgitz.com/shop/item65.htm

The good side of this one is it also operates the sky box and looks very good too

I bought about 5 transmitters to operate the sky and one receiver, which is in the AV cabinet. Works a whole lot bette then the sky eyes which i had before
and do not have to make any holes in the cabinet to have an eye showing to pick up the transmissin as these IR extenders work on FM

Just so i understand, one of them sits somewhere is your room and the other sits near the IR windows on your equipment which is housed out of sight?

So i can add a second transmiiter in the bedroom and change the channels of the skybox downstairs.

Andy

Spot on, thanks

Looks like a can build the big AV wall and house all my black and silver boxed things out of sight.

Andy

I did a lot of research on those IR transmitters and even contemplated building my own one, when i stumbled upon this one

And yes if you put the transmitter infront of the IR window (which is within the enclosed cabinet) you can put the receiver anywhere in the house. I have them all over the house and even in the summer house to operate the AV equipment (sky box)

This is because it works on FM transmission

In the link i showed it has some blue print on the bottum but they actually come completely black (quite stylish) and are about 10cm high by 5cm square

Mcluma, this is the one thats going to get ordered. I like the easy set-up. Only problem is you have to purchase an "all-in-one" controller for each room, but thats better than sending the wife downstairs.

Thinking about it, no extra controllers, then the wife can still get my beer at the same time of turning the channel over (hope she isn't reading this)
