To silence fans/blowers, the industrial solution is to fit a silencer, which is rather like a sports car "straight through" silencer. You could line the inside of ~60 cm of 110 mm pvc soil pipe with glass fibre, covered by a layer of foam, leaving a central axial hole the same size or a bit bigger then the vac outlet.

Thanks Grafter - I'll go and visit the Edinburgh's Machinemart and a couple of good dealers in vacuum spares. If needs be there may have to be a modification plan to drain pipes.
Cheers

I've just had a look through your earlier posting, Grafter, at the seemingly identical models that your links all show, and will raise the warning that these all use vacuum cleaner size hoses which may well be adequate for dust from sanders, small routers, and small chips from buzz saws and the likes, but are not adequate for planers, wood turning, etc.

Until someone finds for us a source for adaptors to larger hose sizes these suckers are only limited in their capability.

The interesting thing is that Axminster RDC100H Vacuum Extractor is an 1100w motor and is fitted with a 100mm hose; internally this machine is just the same as the one Grafter points too, so Axminster are OK with using this design of vacuum with a much larger hose.

I don't want to make un-tested claims for it, but my little box may well do this job. I really can't see why it wouldn't........small hose from vacuum to box, big hose from box to chip-producing machine. This is something I will test when I can get some proper workshop time, unless someone wants to try it first, maybe?

old wood - if making a 'mikes magic box' - then any size hose can go into the box - then the original hose can link the box outlet to the hoover - no adapter will be required

see this thread: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/view ... c&start=15

and the next page for photos of the box

its just about sourcing the hose size most useful for the work you do
i was just seeking info for a suitable hoover to connect to

I've used my earlex with the planer, before I got my extractor, and it worked OK. Had no blockages as such but its far from ideal as it fills up so quickly you spend more time emptying than planing. You can get a large bore hose kit for them but you'd still have the constant emptying to do.

Unless I have missed the point (which is quite possible!) very few chips will make it though to the vacuum cleaner with the scheme being proposed so emptying that is not an issue.

Yep, guys, you're right. And the logic is not only the hose size, but also the larger accumulator and the better dust extraction. The problem will be where to put it in my ever increasingly small workshop !!

Mike and Grafter - sorry if I was a bit heavy handed with my comment. Can you tell me what size of hose is on the David; the hose size I have will go OK into the box in some manner, but I will need a larger hose on the input side and that is where I'm struggling as none of the ones on the sites given seem to be any larger than normal vacuum cleaner size.

Thanks

Err... yes.... errrr.... I knew that, I was errr.... just seeing if you all were paying attention.

large bore tube - anyone find any others??

axminster sell 1000mm tube
http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axmi ... -22321.htm

from axminster it appears that all numatic hoses (david, henry, all the family...) are 32mm - axminster sell spares

this floor gulper could be useful
http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axmi ... 804544.htm

and if required here is a Stepped Hose Reducer for £8
http://www.axminster.co.uk/src/froogle/ ... 208855.htm

http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/sp-4 ... -100mm.asp

http://www.ductstore.co.uk/acatalog/VF_ ... _Hose.html

http://www.rutlands.co.uk/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/DKL2
thining about it - it would seem that a large bore and a small bore could be drilled into the box and then one blanked when not in use

will this system require earthing?

No but it might need a guard to stop you and your loved ones being sucked up it.

It's not going to need earthing if the pipework is all plastic - and the wire element in the plastic hoses is not going to come in contact with any metalwork that *could* become live.

But there is the concern on static - I notice that using the vacuum hose around the lathe has to be done with a touch of care as the static build up on the plastic hose discharges from me onto the lathe - ouch again! Now static and dust are not good mixers and I do wonder what steps should be taken to avoid any build up.
