Hi

i've got some old barns on my farm one of which I want to convert into a workshop and another part of which i shall be living in. The roof is currently asbestos cement.

I want to cover them with onduline sheets which seem reasonably priced and quite attractive,also don't fancy dealing with asbestos cement removal.

can anybody comment on their longevity or pleasantness? Thinking of getting the one with built in insulation too.

Onduline is bitumen based, and as such will need supporting at closer intervals than concrete/asbestos sheet, especially if the pitch is shallow. I replaced the asbestos sheet on our garage with it. They do a matching profile sheet called coraline (IIRC), which is clear and supports it's own weight better in case you want to let any light in.

I roofed a stable with this stuff. It's lasts reasonably well - perhaps 10 years or more. Personally I didn't like it much - it's not much more than bituminised cardboard. Although cheaper than most other roof covering, it's got little strength and rigidity, hence more expense on roof timber.

So you are leaving the asbestos on? For safety sake maybe beforehand, you should spray a suitable sealer on the underside if accessible?. Praps something like stabiliser solution or a PVA solution.
