My brother-in-law has given me an old saw table.

sawtable.JPG

He says it is a Bosch (I can't see any markings on it at all) and that a cheap Bosch circulaw saw (free-hand kind) can be mounted under it like a router in a table.

My question is: will any old saw fit, do you think?

Not as simple as that.

It's SWMBO's favourite brother!

I will be using this thing even if I have to poke a handsaw up through the slit!!! #-o

Machine Mart sell a similar table and iirc any circular
saw will fit, i bought one years ago to use as a router
table and it did what i needed it for.

Well, I bought an inexpensive Bosch today (has to go back - they said it had a laser but it doesn't! ) but it says in the instructions not to use it "stationary" and that it is not meant for use in a table.

Is this just one of those things they put on such items or is it true, are there different types?

Seriously, don't bother with this idea!! You're better off using a CS the other way up with a guide rail.

I have a Triton Workcentre and, trust me, any hand held circular saw can be used inverted in it, so I presume that any saw that will fit the mount can be used in your table. The Triton can produce accurate work if set up and used properly (ask Argee) so, if you have no other table saw, it might be worth a go. A lot will depend on how rigidly the saw is mounted and how solid the fence is, ie. doesn't bend under pressure. At least if you give it a go it will keep SWMBO happy.
ps. you could tell her you need a really expensive CS to go in the table, then she will either veto the whole thing or you win a good saw for hand held use...just a thought

Just tell them that, sadly, it is missing a special bit that is now unavailable and needed for safe operation. Then bin the lot.

PS Try to look gutted when you tell them

Great advice guys, of all kinds, cheers.

Few probs:
1. HAVE to use it, no choice
2. BiL already told her that it only needs a cheap one
3. Maybe BiL knows littl but FiL knows lots - can't risk it!

Talking of risks. I did buy the Bosch saw but will take it back as they advertised it (B&Q) as having a laser but it doesn't.

Anyway, I fired it up and wow!!! That is a scary monster! I thought routers were frigtening but this thing! Problem is, I'll be shaking so much when I use it that it'll not matter whether it's in a table or being held by the cat!

If he really knows lots, he will understand your reluctance to use it.

I presume the riving knife on the Bosch saw will pass through the table along with the blade? How about a blade guard? Is there any sort of accurate guide to make sure the wood doesn't bind on the back of the blade as it is cut?

Never mind not using it myself, I wouldn't even want to be in the same room when someone else uses it.

enlist the FiL to your side but be canny , dont tell him you think its crap - tell him you really want to use it but are worried about the safety aspects (unguarded blade etc ), with any luck he'll condemn the whole thing and you'll be safe to chuck it as it will be on her daddy's say so

you could also play the safety aspect with swimbo - again tell her you really want to use her brothers wonderful gift , but that someone on here has suggested it might be dangerous (show her some blood and gore pics - google for tablesaw injuries and you'll find loads, such as this http://woodwhispererforum.com/showthread.php?p=20864), then tell her that she shouldnt worry as you are "sure it will be fine" - with any luck she'll go straight into wifey overdrive and forbid you to do anysuch thing.

If she just says "excellent" while rubbing her hands together in glee then you really need that divorce ;)

edit: and this one http://woodwhispererforum.com/showthread.php?t=1982 does anyone else thing is a bit creepy that wood whisperer have a whole forum devoted to accidents and gruesome photos

hehe yebbut it's about promoting safety.... honest ;)

You could be right!

Thing about him though is that with the crappiest tools/wood/workshop he produces superb work that he can sell, easily!

I could have a shop that Norm would envy and still produce dross.
