I think I know the answer to this, but before I start taking things apart I'd like an opinion.
This week I started a round of refurbishing some planes, they were workers but tatty and needed sharpening. Doing this I found a Record 03 I bought a while back for the princely sum of £9, and then never done anything with. In fact all it needed were new handles and a clean and sharpen.
Sharpened the cutter, enough to take hairs off my arm (and a bit of skin) and put it all back together. The first shavings (edge on a bit of softwood that was already in the vice) came out thin but corrugated like crepe paper, and adjusting the cutter didn't make any difference.
Could it be that I have got the chip breaker (it is an SS) set too close to the edge of the cutter? (it is quite close) Or the frog too advanced? (I wanted a tight mouth)

Mind, as I haven't wanted to use it in the year or two since I bought it, it probably isn't too urgent...

But you'll be pleased to know that the 05 and the 04½ are doing very nicely and cost less than a tenner between them.

Sounds like the chipbreaker - trying pulling it back a small amount. Also, make sure it beds tightly along the iron - any gaps are a no-no. Polishing the front of the chipbreaker also makes it easier for shavings to flow over it.
Hope this helps,
Philly :D

Hi Dick,

If you have the mouth really tight and the cap iron very close to the edge of the blade, then there is usually not enogh room for the shavings to get through. I would suggest you set the cap iron back a bit. These days I don't set the cap iron too close to the edge and the cut doesn't seem to suffer. It can also help if the front edge of the mouth slopes away a little towards the front of the plane - helps to give a little more room for the shavings.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Thanks, both. That's pretty much what I thought. I did clean and polish the front edge of the chipbreaker - it didn't look like it was seating too well, as the front edge was quite rough. I'll give it a go this afternoon.

Thanks, guys, that fixed it.

To my amazement, it's not an SS! I've got a plane without a 2-piece! The shame!

Any idea where I can get one (for an 03)? I'm not sure Clifton make diddy ones.
