I ran out to the shed this afternoon :D first time for 2 whole weeks  I got a manky old oak board from a ladies wood heap, swapping it for a pen, she was most happy

So I knocked up this platter :D

Its 14" wide and a bit more than the awvsl can handle, so had to be cut with super light cuts to avoid the lathe doing its groaning/shaking thing.

Comment/critique welcome 8)

Good spotting there JT on the wood front, bet she would gladly swap the pen back if she saw it.

Stretching the machine to it's limits done sensibly is a very good way to hone your cutting skills.

The form you've achieved fits well with the woods time developed character.

Lovely platter, simple and well proporttioned, makes the most of the figure - To make it useable I might be tempted to fill the cracks with brass, but it's just fine the way it is.

That looks lovely JT ,well worth a pen:D
I would keep it as it is,cracks 'n' all.All adds to the charachter of the wood.
Great :D

What a superb find, and a beautifully worked platter.Where did you say this lady lived???

Thanks chaps :). The timber was really dusty and mucky and had me sharpening every couple of minutes. I've still got another 5' of it left 8) with two more good patches of burr :D

On the holes and cracks front,I couldn't bring myself to fill them, I really like the look and feel they give to a piece, obviously it means the platter is purely decorative, I just have to hope someone who feels the same way wants to buy it

Yes but the frustration of this lathe is getting worse, when it does vibrate its enough to make 2-3mm deep holes in the surface when working on things more than say about 10" wide.

JT that looks really great, the burring is nice to look at, I see no problem selling that one :D :D
The deep brown colour looks just right.
Nice one, how is the nipper?

Cheers Rich :D, it has got a lovely colour to it, I reckon the board is a good few hundred years old, most likely taken out from an old building as the lady I got it from had a husband who was a builder(now deceased).

And junior is good 8) he wakes up every 3-4 hours crying for a good feed but is otherwise very content :D

cheers JT
