nvr switch question

hi ihave recently finishe building a bill pentz cyclone and am attempt.ing to install a light sensor cut out switch.ihave a nvr switch from a schappach site saw which is man enough to run my 3hp motor .it has an extra wire which im pretty certain is for a thermal cutout in the old motor .my question is can i some how wire my light sensor switch into this as my new motor only needs the three wires .i want to wire it so that the light sensor throws another relay to trip the release switch the light sensor is 12v dc so it would be wired to a 12vdc coil 240vac relay and hopefully wired to the nvr .any advice on how to accomplish this .been lurking for a couple of years this is my first post thanks in advance neil

Hi,
The way I'd wire it would be as follows:

- 12v DC source -> Light sensor -> Relay coil -> Ground
- 240v AC -> NVR switch -> Relay switch -> Motor

Basically you'll need to put the relay switch just before the motor, wired to the live (usually brown) wire. Just make sure your relay can take the Amps the motor draws.

hi george i think were at cross purposes here i dont think i explained it very clearly .i want to know if its possible to wire the 12vdc 240volt relay to the wire previously used by the themal cut out so that when the light sensor operates it will throw the nvr switch hope thats clearer.otherwise the motor will start while im emptying the trashcan .i need it to kill the power so that i can empty it and then switch it on again

If your relay contacts are rated to carry the motor current, wire relay coil to the light sensor using the 12v supply, then wire 230v L to relay contact, then from relay contact to NVR in the normal manner.
Does the sensor turn on or off when the cyclone is full?

Any chance of some details of the sensor you have? I have a home made cyclone and it would be good to have a way of knowing when the dust bin is full.

hi roy i have the sensor and an led opposite each other in the pipe just above the lid of the dustbin .as the bin fills it will block the the light and the sensor then turns on sending a 12v signal to the relay.the nvr is 16 amps all the wires to the motor and power in will stay the same but on the switch section it lookslike the neutral is linked to the neutral in and the wire from the thermal cut out is cnnected to the other side presumably this wire is being fed power from inside the motor .so how would i run the power to the new rely would i just take it from the live in terminal to relay then from relay to the switch then when the light sensor sends signal it would interrupt the power throwing the nvr

hi davel the sensor is being made for me by a guy at www.reuk.co.uk. its £16 inc postage he modified his design on the site for me using 1 metre wires on the led and sensor and adding a dc socket so i can power it with a plug top transformer .also changed it to turn off the relay rather than turn on

hi roy the old motor that ive taken the switch from had the thermal cutout the new motor hasnt unless its completely internal thats what got me thinking i could wire in the light sensor somehow.

I'm still a bit puzzled. A thermal switch for motor protection will have a normally closed N/C contact which opens at a set temp and will stay closed regardless of your cyclone sensor.
If your relay contacts will handle the motor current simply wire the contacts into the L supply to the NVR, if it won't then a little more complexity is involved.

well im puzzled too.but im going to have to change the wiring on the swich somehow. because at the moment its wired to the old motor still in this 4 wire con figuration the switch is an aeg KS3 .its quite old butworks well also the terminals have no letters or nos.

You should only need 2 wires to run your cyclone motor, can you identify the motor wires on the NVR?

ok roy iwill make a drawing tomorrow to post but as i said its the 4th wire i was some how hoping to use for the sensor then all the other wiring will be vitually the same i suppose

What you're saying is that the 2 remaining wires went to an internal thermal motor switch that turned off the NVR if the motor over heated.
If that's correct, then yes, wire the relay contacts into that circuit.
