If you want to do end grain hollow forms go with what Richard has said except that you would work from the neck down to the widest part and also from the bottom up to the widest part this means that you are cutting with the grain and not against it

Spending a day or two with a teacher, there are plenty around, was the best investment I gave myself after teaching myself via books and you tube. I wasn't that far off but what I learned from someone who knew was how to sharpen my tools correctly, how to present the tool safely, to practice, practice and more practice (yeah right, I wanna make something) and actually it gave me more confidence in my workshop.
Take up the offer given above, it will be worth a few custard creams.
