A former boss of mine, self-made type with a wife who made sure he kept himself well-grounded, set great store by marketing. Bit like the Stell Artois "Reassuringly expensive", he continued a "cheapest isn't always best" campaign throughout a period of recession, arguing that those who continued advertising during difficult times would be foremost in buyer's minds when they needed to spend. He also played on our 'niche' factors - we offered products/services no-one else (at the time) could and we charged a premium because we knew those who needed these specialist items had no option but to buy from us. But there's marketing and then there's pretentious twaddle. I know a professional photographer who was described by another pro as being capable of "talking a better photograph than he can take". He's by no means a poor photographer he's just not as good as he would have you believe. I had the pleasure of hearing him tell a woman precisely why the photo he had taken was so good and way beyond the abilities of lesser photographers. The more he spoke te more it became apparent he didn't actually know what he was talking about. Nor to whom as the woman had been running a professional photography business since before he was born! However he is a busy lad because a lot of people believe he's as brilliant as he says he is.
