Hi , I currently have a garage running across the end of my garden with a service road for access , then 2 sheds with a path running between the sheds to the garage :?

Thinking , it would be extra nice to clear the lot and replace with one big workshop , still have the up and over door " from the garage " so if needs must I can still bring a vehicle inside , This would not take up any more room than the buildings that are already there but will give me a lot more room

Anyone know the rules regarding log cabin type buildings ?

Hi ,

Complicated ..., you will need to do some research , for any temporary building (wooden )some of the factors include
what you intend to do with the thing (is it going to be habitable )
what services are you fitting , whats the ridge height and overall volume.
Max height is 4m ridge as far as i know , but if your neighbours dont like that ....

Mind you if you are demolishing an existing stucture then it may be easier for you .
You may need planning permission if the building takes you beyond
the limit allowed for your property.

The best advice initially is to talk to the neighbours to check they are not going to have an issue with it and go off to the council . If they do then that could lead to alot of attention to detail from different council depts , methinks that could end up being expensive .
I remember when we had works done on a past house and the council
got wind that we were moving the position of the kitchen sink , cost me £100 for building regs or something , if i had just quietly got on with it they
wouldnt have ever known .
There are some threads on here , you could search the forum for , but in the end you really need to check your local council website as they make the rules afterall.
If you can possibly build what you want within the guidelines so as not to have to consult the council at every stage i think you will be quids in .
One thing i am not shortcutting on with my workshop build is part p on the electrics , if you dont get a certificate then i've heard it can void your house insurance ''

Of course if you end up building a permanent thing then you will have to
do all the PP and buildings regs stuff any way .

I would love to build a log cabin myself , but £££££ meant i am using shiplap to build mine . Hope that has helped in some small way !!!

The government has recently instructed councils to stop having personal contact with 'customers' would you believe Blister, but if your local people are anything like mine, have a chat with them. It could save you a lot of hassle, mine gave me all the info, followed up with a booklet, explaining the dos and donts, saves getting it wrong and having to go back to the start.

Have you got a source for that, Roy? It doesn't sound very likely to me at all.

Not now Jake, no, but according to the report they were to encourage people to use the telephone, E-mail, or text.
It wasn't on April the first though.

Oh, OK, I see - well not having people in queues in council offices makes sense. I thought you meant that councils had been told to ignore people entirely, not just to encourage telephoning!

I have a friend who is a planning officer and her biggest gripe is that people submit plans without a clue about the regulations and then get shirty when they are rejected.

Her advise was to go and have a chat in person to the planning department (they had a drop in office where you could go and see the duty planner) and have a chat about what you want to do and they will be able to tell you there and then if you are going to get away with it.

Hi all , found this on Ebay

Double 45mm timber with room for 50mm insulation between the walls

you can run electric cables and water pipes between the shins :D so nothing on show

I was also going to put a 50mm insulated roof on as well , they come as a board , foil / insulation and ply , put this on top of the std roof before felting

Will go and see one in the flesh first :p
