new toy - sealey drill press

Well I phoned a guy who sells motors on fleabay to see if he had one for my Sealey and he said.."what! We don't sell that c*&p" so I promptly told him to insert his quill in a dark place and I had no intention of patronising that company again!

I think we are all in danger of being elitist with tools. IMHO, a tool should be fit for purpose...and my Sealey is...it is just what I need...nothing more nothing less. I had the baby one which was crap but this is a butch one that has a decent Jacobs chuck...no play whatever and a motor that used to go around...

Had I bought a £1000, I guess the motor might have lasted a tad longer but hell...it was only £20 at a bootfair...has a rise and fall table...weighs in about the size of three hippos and once I get a new motor will continue to give good service.

I drill wood with it...not precision metalwork for Space Shuttles....

And Moose....glad to know you aren't roaming the forest butting trees anymore!

Can I ask what model yours is?

moose well done , sealey is not a good make, however, having said that at the same time it not a bad make either, not one of the better known ones sort of middle of the road , from what you say no movement in the quill that the most important thing of all the rest is just cosmetic which you can clean up and refurb in your own time , lets be honest most small workshop have some sort of drill standing in a corner which get very little use at all probable why your has no movement in the quill. refurb it, look at it long term if you get ten yrs from it £50 then it is bloody cheap , enjoy.hc :wink: :lol: :lol:

I have 3 heat guns and the one I lift every time is the 24 year old Sealey. The Sealey stuff isn't top of the ranges but, from my limited experience, it does the job well.

Hi Martin,

Jim and I have discussed this motor. It has a significant leak to earth and so is really beyond hope. I've looked through my stock of motors and not got anything suitable in single phase - I really only bother to pick up 3 phase motors these days as they are more versatile and I know how to run them on domestic mains supplies.

Jim got the drill so cheap but I guess the owner knew about the problem but kept quiet. I think he is holding out hoping an equally cheap motor appears.
I'm keeping an eye out for something suitable for him.

I don't know who you spoke to off ebay, but I bought a motor from this chap for the pillar drill I rebuilt, very pleased with it. It is a 1HP motor so might be a bit big for your machine, but worth a look.

Yes...Bob beat me to it....he has been most helpful! As he says we discussed it (at length) and I concur, the motor is buggered!

Bob...thanks for looking mate....the bootfairs start soon so I am sure I will find something!

The little toerag knew all very well that there was a fault....he disconnected the bleedin' earth in the plug so it wouldn't trip the RCD!!!!

Forget the fact that it gave me a shock...which wasn't too bad with rubber soled boots on a wooden floor but got worse when I touched the ali wall insulation!!!!!

That being rectified resulted in my finding the fault...before then it went around fine!! :shock:

However...it's worth £30 in scrap steel...and there are two chucks...one this really good Jacobs which was covered in grease so is perfect...never used.

One of the pulleys is now appearing as a "temporary" role as a countershaft for my ML1 lathe as is one of the V-Belts...

I'll find a motor soon....it might take a while but it will walk up to me...I am sure!

you might have to re machine the pulley to make it fit but its pretty simple technology so any motor of the same sort of size ought to be able to be made to fit with a bit of metal work.

alternately could you buy a cheap drill on ebay, like one of the B& poo ones and canabilise the motor ?

Yup Moose...I looked at that...and Sittingbourne had a manager's special for £60 too...but I didn't have the spec with me at the time....

Will check again when I go to get my Japanese saw...bet it will be sold!

Bootfair tomorrow and Monday...bet I find one there!

looks a bit technical to me, matty I'm not sure i'm ready for that level of tool yet so i'll leave it to the pros like you, afterall now that you are selling your 352 etc you must be ready for some serious tools

Also some of the pillar drills in their catalogue look suspiciously like my Sealey down to the detail of the adustment on the mounting plate. I have found them very helpful with spares for Taiwanese clone machines not sold under their brands. Might be worth an enquiry?

I am HOPING that tomorrow will bring fine weather so that the last day of a 3 day super bootfair just up the road from me goes ahead...I usually find sacrificial bits and bobs at these events...
