You're right that it's a single-car garage, Pete. Except, mine's 5.4m x 3m where as, your space looks slightly wider and less rectangular...? If I really wanted one, yes, I could clear some space and fit one in somewhere. But the chore of having to drag it out and away from a wall would drive me crazy! I'm much happier ripping stuff on the bandsaw, for all of the five-minutes it takes to swap the blade.

I don't doubt that one day I will own a small table saw, purely as a means of cutting sheet materials more accurately and with greater efficiency than the skil saw-and-sawboard/guide rail method. I reckon I would then be looking at something like that Makita 2704, which has telescopic extensions. I could then drag it out and use it on the drive, when necessary. Doubt I'd use it for ripping timber though as these saws (with the risk of kickback, particularly more-so than most other machines) can become a serious hazard in a narrow space.

I think it may well be the Makita LS1013. I'm dropping the wife & kids off in Brum on friday, and there's one for sale (collection only) in Leicester and < £200. It's 110v - but then again so is half of my kit.

Edit: just checked on the bay and there's a whole glut of the Hitachi ones, relatively local and for £120 - that's for the rear sliders and bevel on one side only - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/hitachi-c8fse-com ... _549wt_939

BSM, If OPJ could fit a table saw into his shop I'd be amazed. I think bandsaw and scms would easily be the best option at present given the space available.

I find my little DW707 very handy for quick repeatable cross cuts. And it doesn't really take up that much room (imho).

he's right that mine is a little bigger than his, tho not vastly - mine fits a kity 419 without much problem, though i have put it on a wheeled unit and combined it with the router table.

I think I'll plump for the 10" Hitachi - it's local and the Makita is £200 whilst the Hitachi is £120. The old one bevelled on the Left - so can't see the Hitachi being an issue.

Swung by Sheffield on the way home from Brum - and the chap had all 3 Hitachi SCMS laid out.

Wizer - All I can say having seen your saw in the flesh - is Dear God, it's bloomin huge!

Went for the 10" dual bevel in the end,

Whilst the 8" one was initially attractive - the lack of the RH bevel and the blade being direct drive - put me off.

The 10" one has a belt driven blade and doesn't sound as rough. Not bad for £170!

p.s. - This chap has oodles of Hitachi gear all recon, some used - routers, circulars, tons of scms's. The big one like Tom's - he sells that for £300.

I lined all 3 of them up - fences all level - and you only save about 5" max by getting the 12" monster. But realistically it would need 2 of you to pick yours up and move it about.

The 10" is on the heavy side - but you could live with it, whereas the 8" one - it's so light, you carry it one handed. But with the 10" you get the double bevel, laser, taller fence and belt drive - so I plumped for that one.

For anyone interested he had loads of 10v lithium Hitachi impact drivers, with chargers, but no batteries - around the £50 mark.

thanks for the pm, much appreciated.I've read all the posts on the forum about scms [I think], and because the main reason for purchase of one is to fit 170mm skirting in my house I think an 8 inch would do the trick.I've just wrecked my performance pro cutting points on stakes for raised beds in the garden[it caught the stake up, jammed it, and bent the drive shaft in the motor-stripped some gear teeth as well], but since the accuracy of the thing was abysmal I shouldn't be too bothered.I originally bought it to do the mitres on picture frames using 3.5x1.5 pine.The Bosch GCM800S seems to be a good accurate machine -has anybody got any comments on it? or any other advice.In the meantime Dibs I'll give that chap a call. Thanks once again.
