I have made my decision and ordered the DW718 from e-bay as suggested by Mike C. Looks like Christmas will be early for me this year. :D This choice took a lot of thinking about but I decided in the end bigger would be better given that I do a lot of 'big' jobs. Will let you know when it arrives.

Well done Mailee you have got a hell of a mitre saw there. Can I suggest that if you use them, you add the DE7187 laser, because this really does take the saw up a notch http://www.dm-tools.co.uk/product.php?sn=DEWDE7187 (look at the video).
I bought mine factory fitted to the saw, but the 718 is pre-wired to accept one, so it only takes a few minutes to fit and set up, and because it is wired into the saw you do not need batteries. You can also turn it on and off without the blade running, which is a bonus for setting up a cut.

You probably already have one from your other saw, but if not, I can also recommend the DE7023 http://www.dm-tools.co.uk/product.php/sn/DEWDE7023 I got mine as a kit with the mitre saw and it really is a good stand with work stops for repeat cuts etc.

Let us know when you get the saw

Cheers

Thanks Mike, I will have to wait a while to let the credit card cool down first but I do intend to get a laser and a stand for it later. I have never owned a stand for one usually using two trestles and a sheet of ply on most jobs but think the advantage of a stand would be a big plus. Will of course let you know when it arrives. Many thanks.

I know you've ordered already Mailee, so I hope this doesn't serve to just upset you, but did you see the deal on at D&M on the saw, laser, and stand?
Certainly looks like a hell of a saw though, I'm sure it'll serve you well on all those big outdoor projects you're so fond of.

Not a bad deal, but don't forget he paid £270 less than that, and he can get the laser from the same company at half the price than D&M charge ebay link and I am sure if he asked they could get him the stand cheaper too, so he would still be quids in.

Well it's arrived :D ....but........it was damaged :( in transit I think. when I took it out of the box which seemed to be well packed the mitre lock handle fell off!! it had broken through the pivot point. I called the company who supplied it and they asked if I could replace the part to which I said I could and he has popped one in the post to me. Good service I would say. Neil who I spoke to asked me for a serial number off the box which gives him the identity of who refurbished it and took the details. I was quite happy with this situation rather than return the item as it is pretty heavy and rather large. Now after inspection of the saw I am unsure as to how the offending item comes apart as the pivot pin looks like it is a drift fit on splines into the alloy casting of the base. (I assumed it was a circlip that held it at first glance) Does anyone know how the pivot pin is supposed to come out? Not sure if it needs a special puller or if it is just hammered out? :?:

Sh-t Mailee as it was me that found the link I am really sorry mate  It seems that it might not have been a bargain after all  I do not know what to say.

If you give me a few minutes I will go out and look at mine and see if I can work out how it is fixed on.

Cheers

Hey no problem Mike, I am not too dissapointed as the backup was great and Neil very helpful. Here is a picture of the damage, got to admit it seems rather silly to use plastic for this part though:

I would still rather fit the new part myself rather than return it due to the weight and size of it. I can't fault the rest of the saw it is brilliant! Got to say though that the kick on startup took me by surprise. I would appreciate you having a look at yours though and letting me know what you think to removing the pin? Thanks.

Hi Mailee, Having looked at mine I think you may have to send it back because it looks like the pin is a drift fit. It is certainly in there very tight and unless you have the right tools you may cause more problems. On the other hand I am far from an expert and someone else may be able advise you different.

Sorry mate

Mike

Alan, if the pin goes all the way through you should be able to drift it out, probably with a smaller bolt or a nail punch, if it's blind its not so easy, you would probably have to drill and tap it and use a dowel extractor, its hard to tell without seeing it.

In that case it should drift out fairly easy, I would think it would have been pressed in so should come out the same way but may be glued, the splines would be there just to hold it in place, if you drift it out tap it on the opposite end of the splines taking care not to damage or mushroom the end else you'll have a job drifting it all the way through.

My apologies if you know this already.

Magic =D> , seeing as I got you into this I tried open pin surgery on my own, and yes it does come out pretty easy with a couple of gentle wacks

When I say it comes out, I only moved mine about 1" because I did not want to remove it, but yes it seems that you will be ok, thank god [-o<

Before you start remove the screw from the mitre lock/detent adjustment rod. This is the rod that is at the front on your picture.

HTH

WOW Mike! I didn't expect you to dismantle yours for me, many thanks though. Now that is what I call very friendly informative advice. :D Thanks for that mate I will take mine apart once the new part arrives. Does the mitre rod screw out or in towards the base to remove it? It looks like a floating fit in the 'gripper part' (for want of a better word) I assume once this is screwed out it will fall free of the 'gripper' leaving the pin with no risistance on it ?

No problem Mailee its the least I could do, because theres nothing worse then looking forward to a nice tool/machine only to find that there is something broke or missing.

Just release the screw/rod so that it will not interfere with the pin.

I hope all goes well and the saw is up and running soon.

Cheers

Mike

Well Mike, after your brilliant instructions here is the offending part:
theoffendingpartcx0.jpg

It wasn't as tight as I had imagined it to be, as you stated a couple of light taps and out it popped. New part shoud be with me tomorrow, will be a happy bunny then. Thanks again for all your time and trouble Mike.

You very welcome Mailee, I am just happy that the problem was sorted out so easily, and you can get on and use your Christmas present as soon as possible

Cheers

Mike
