New ...old guy!

Hi All,

I'm Winchy a retired project manager in the UK. I started off as a mechanical engineer and then went back to school and did electrical and electronic engineering during which I did quite a lot of software. And this is what got me my first job as a Grad software engine (hmm maybe some imposter syndrome here). But this is back in the day when Pascal, Fortran and assembler oh and some Algol and Cobol were the only languages in town and every one was cooing over intel 8086 (God I wish I'd sold the family home and bought Intel shares). So back then if you could spell 'software' you got the job! Fast forward 30 years. .....so as it transpired all those hours of working for qualifications, no one ever asked to see them. I did a few big software projects but never got to raise a soldering iron in anger for the electronics degree. Instead I was lured into project management where as you all know it's all about the art of delivering bad news well to your client. But that's mostly behind me and I look forward to a short but interesting retirement.....

Well I know nothing about IT or programming lol but many on here do .welcome to ukw .have you made the crossover to woodworking or is it the technical side your interests now take you- cnc routers , 3d printing etc ..

Hi Bingy and to answer you question I've always loved working with wood my grandfather was a cabinet maker and he used to give me off cuts to work with in the shop when I was a nipper. But for me I didn't see it as a vocation. He passed away many years ago but we still have his tool chest. As part of his apprenticeship he had to make his own tools and chest.

Hello Winchy.

Have you made any decisions about what style of woodworking you're going to begin with and what particular items you'll make? When starting out you'll discover a tool market minefield .... but many here can help you construct a map and a path to get through it without blowing up your wallet. To do so, we'd need to know where you want to go and in what manner.

Your inherited toolchest may contain gems ... but also dross. Perhaps you'd be willing to describe (with photos and text) some of its content? Many here (not me, mind) are expert on the old tools and their qualities.

Welcome. I remember going on a Cobol course late 80's and being a bit surprised to find we were using punch cards......the one really useful thing I learned was that if you get a punch hole in the wrong place you can insert the missing 'chad' then rub with the end of a pen on a hard surface - with a bit of luck you get enough grip for it to card through the card reader !

I am a retired electrical/electronic engineer and have dabbled with computers since the Z80 was the ‘must have’ processor.
