Welcome to the Forum.
You don’t say where you are in East Yorks, but if you don’t already know, you might like to be aware that there is a well-established woodturning Club which meets on the third Tuesday evening each month at Skidby Village Hall. We had to close for two years due to the Pandemic, during which the Hall was completely refurbished. The club is back on a firm footing and thriving once more, with some 65 members, about ten of whom are female. We have an average attendance of 50.
The format of meetings is that we have a programme of registered professional turners who demonstrate for us, with seating ‘cinema style’ with two digital projectors and screens so wherever anyone sits, they get a close-up view of the turning.
The benefit of seeing professional turners is that as they turn, they give a running commentary covering such topics as safe working, choice of timbers, how to mount the wood on the lathe, what speed to run the lathe at, the choice of tool for each task, sanding and finishing, tool sharpening, how to avoid pitfalls, and so on, with the opportunity to ask questions.
Meetings start at 7pm. There’s no off-street parking so you need to park on Main Street and it’s a good idea to arrive at 630ish. We have a short refreshment break at 8pm, and meetings finish at 9.30pm. We have a monthly themed competition which on alternate months is judged during the refreshment break either by a panel of three judges, or by voting slips completed by anyone who attends. You can see examples of competition entries in the 'gallery' on the Club's website.
Our September meeting is Tuesday September 17th: The demonstrator is Richard Findley, Registered Professional Woodturner.
Richard is from Leicester, where he undertakes a wide range of work for architects, furniture makers and restorers, builders, and the general public from his workshop. He has written more than 130 magazine articles and has appeared on the front cover of Woodturning magazine. In addition to demonstrating to woodturning clubs around the country, Richard has also demonstrated at major woodturning events worldwide. He makes a welcome return to our Club.
