I was having a conversation recently with the MD of a UK based company who manufacture solely in mainland China and also Hong Kong. I was bemoaning the quality of some components I had subbed out to a Taiwan company. He has 30 years experience working with the Chinese and interestingly, he pointed out that as Taiwanese labour costs have soared relative to mainland China, to remain as competitive as they can they are cutting other costs. This includes using cheaper lower grade materials, and less rigourous QA. Meanwhile the vast inward investment in chinese manufacturing processes and technology is vastly improving overall quality. In fact my existing Taiwanese supplier now outsources some manufacturing to mainland factories.
It's one big melting pot out there now.
