Would you think this was just for turners or do you think it might make a nice guitar finish...maybe on the necks?

How do you use it...I am not familiar with hard wax finishes...

Jim

Hi Jim,

You use it like a standard oil, just rub it on and then wipe it off. It is designed to be more hard wearing than a standard oil finish though so for something that is going to be handled a lot such as a guitar neck it could be just the job!!! It was originally developed for use on floors and worktops so that gives an idea as to how hard wearing it is and as I'm sure you know, certain woods look way better with an oil finish than any other type of finish such as Oak and Walnut so it may well be worth a go for you.

Cheers

Richard

Mmmm...interesting!

Currently I only use Tru-Oil which is actually a polymerised oil finish rather than an oil...used for gunstocks like Purdeys....

It has a wonderful feel to it and can be replenished simply by adding a new coat now and then. I love the stuff but it is hard to get and blinkin' expensive...

How would this compare to that finish?

Maybe I should give it a punt...at a tenner...I can't really go wrong!

Jim

I'll be interested how this goes. Do you have any drying times for it Richard?

I've used the Fiddes equivalent for the last year or two and like it, but the Chestnut seems to be available in smaller tins which at my rate of work would certainly help. If Axminster start stocking the 500ml tin, it could be an "order filler" at some point :)

Hi guys,

Thanks for your interest.

Jim, it would be very similar I would think, in that to "top up" just wipe over another coat but it should be pretty hard wearing, especially with 2, 3 or 4 coats on.

Boz, the quoted drying time is about 4 hours and I stock 250ml cans as standard.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Jorgoz,

I'm affraid it is although I would be happy to charge postage to you at cost price. I don't know how much that would be though.

Cheers

Richard

Thanks to everyone that has taken up the offer. I hope you have all had success with the new finish. Both Terry and Myself will be interested to hear of your experiences with it!!

Just to let you know, I will be keeping the offer open to forum members upto and including the 1st of May 2010. I will re-post a reminder before the closing date.

Thanks again for your support!!

Richard

Did you send mine yet Richard? Not had any deliveries :(

I'd be very interested to hear peoples experiences with this on oak. I've got a step stool to finish and was going to use tung oil, but this sounds like a better bet.

Cheers

Personally I think this type of finish is a godsend to us home woodies. Available in sensible small volumes, no special brushes or spray kit, no special extraction booths neeeded, doesn't stink the place out and dries fast enough that you can get the job done in a day. Perfect!

I've used Osmo as well as Chestnut. Both give great results, and Chestnut is a bit quicker-drying, I think, so that helps too. I'm oiling an iroko fire surround with it at the moment.

There isn't the range of sheens that you can get with precat, but I think that that is the only downside.

Fantastic stuff!

Hi All,

Just to update you and give a little more info, Olly (OPJ) has been using the HWO on a project and has given a really good review of the finish on his blog, read it here:

http://ollypj.wordpress.com/2010/04/20/wood-machining-project-2009/

The review starts about halfway down the page but the hole thing is worth a read.

Don't forget, the offer ends 1st May!!

Cheers

Richard

P.s, A massive thanks to all those that have supported the offer!!!

Hi all,

The offer is now closed

A massive thank you to everyone that has supported the offer and tried the new product. Feedback seems to be very positive so far. I shall be keeping the new finish as part of my normal stock so you know where to come when you run out

Thanks again,

Richard

Initial views on receiving my tin and trying a test piece is very favourable.

It may be a serious contender for my favourite guitar finish...Tru-Oil.

What I look for in this type of finish is the tactile nature of the product once dry. Almost all of the uses I put Tru-Oil to are for constant touching...like guitar necks and tool handles.

I plan to use this on my bootfair plane restoration projects so that will certainly put the finish in the "constantly touched" zone.

I will post a review of my findings in that thread later...

Certainly the delivery was superb! Next day...can't beat that!

Jim
