Myford ML8

Good afternoon. My name is David and I’m new to this site! I recently got a wood lathe (after more than 40years of wanting one.) it is a Myford ML8, probably about 60 years old. Which means the head stock has two sized threads and I’m guessing is a whitworth thread. I looked up on line and it indicates that the main bed side is a 1”x12 whit. I need help as I don’t have a chuck (3 or 4 prong) to go with it. This makes turning a bowl challenging. So I’m asking anybody for advice. Can I get an adaptor so I can use a modern chuck? Can I get hold of an old one anywhere? Are modern threads compatible with this old thread etc etc. any help would be great.

If you are sure the original threads have not been damaged or altered the Nova lines of chucks can be purchased with inserts to fit your lathe.

There are likely British made chucks with their own insert/adaptors but I am not familiar with them.

are good, especially if you think you might upgrade at some stage. (I suspect this is what James meant to link to.) Versachuck slides/carriers accept both Versachuck and Axminster jaws, which widens the scope for buying second hand.
