Hi,

Just wondered if the rear handle on the 22" plane is offset right of centre - I have three at the moment (two will be on ebay shortly!), they all have this feature and I was wondering how common it might be, I've not seen it on any smaller planes and I've not seen any bigger planes (yet),

Cheerio,

Carl

Handle is centred on this one

If it is a laminated blade you can often see a line in the bevel when you grind it.

And you can't swap blades easilly between wooden planes. The blades are never exactly the same in taper and thickness and the fitting of the wedge is critical in that regard. Luckily, wooden planes are cheap, so you can just buy as many as you want.

Thanks for that Jacob, though I intend using these, not for collecting

I actually wanted to be able to transfer blades between planes and have a different profile on each but they all have different widths - boo

Guess that's down to having different blades from different manufacturers - find out tomorrow as I've got two more Alex Mathieson coming plus another little smoother

3 more on the way. Are you addicted too?

I get a bit obsessed according to swmbo :)

But perhaps, I loved the feel of Baby Bear - funny grind on the blade makes it a great scrub plane (sounds like I know what I'm talking about but its only cos I read about using different planes)

Have you got a collection then ?

Drop by here and I'll trade you a good few woodies for that PRESTON iron alone 8)

As for one plane with multiple blade profiles, pattern makers planes were often made like your thinking but with a batch of the same irons and slot on soles  By the way this sort of set up usually uses SINGLE irons as opposed to DOUBLE (two part) irons.

Especially at "moderate" grits. Clearly, the hardness of the steel affects how much it wears when abraded (*), and this seems (IME) to be most pronounced at around 80-100 Grit (using SiC).

BugBear

(*) this is also why harder steels take a finer edge for a given grit
