Just wanted to show off my new rabbet plane. :D

Got a removable front, looks brand new with a full length blade.

Bought it from eBay £29 because I just liked the look of it. Fortunately it cuts beautifully.

Don't know who it is made by but I think it is fantastic.

I've got something similar to that. I always thought it was a Stanley but cant find any indication on it and cant find it in Blood 'n Gore.

I just went to take a look at it and the screw adjuster for the blade seems to have gone missing.

Major search of the workshop and tool storage ares shortly, but if I have no luck any idea where I might find one? 8-[

It looks like a copy of the Record #077a, which was later known as the #077, which is confusing, because there was an earlier, slightly different tool which was known as the #077.

The origins of the plane are even earlier than Record #077a, as the original design was Edward Preston's and the model transferred to Record in the mid 1930's.

Looking at the finish of the plane it sure is today's production, not new old stock or a craftsman-made one-off. The polishing marks are one clue, another is the sharp edges of the adjustment screw. They do not look that old.

I don't think it's an one-off. You can copy the castings of the frame and lever cap/cap iron/handle with several different methods, but on the original planes the iron hold-down screw is always machined, not a cast part. So there would have been nothing to copy in that case and an one-off would have this part machined.

Anant has an identical hold-down screw, but the finish of your plane looks a lot better. But all in all, I think that the plane is made somewhere on the eastern part of the globe...

yes - but since the plane in question has a shim-adjusted mouth, it's a copy of the Record tool.

You are quite right about the Record tool's origins (in turn), of course.

I was pretty sure that Preston had a shim in their planes as well. It would explain a lot if it's a Record invention, as my Preston is missing the shim and making a new one has been on my TUIT list for a long time.

So there would not have been an adjusting shim on the Preston at all, although it has a detachable nose?

I'm fairly sure that my Grandfather's Preston didn't have shim(s). The detachable nose converts it to a pure bull-nose plane.

My Record has two shims of different thickness.

Thanks for that Mick.

Looking at it, it appears that the adjuster on the eBay one runs up and down the thread, whereas I think I remember that the adjuster on the Record 077 had a fixed knurled end and the adjuster actually screwed in and out of the body in order to move the blade. The pictures in the OP seem to confirm this.

Anybody else got info that might help?

Hi,

The 77/77A adjuster runs up and down a fixed stud.

Pete

Thanks for that Pete.

Any idea what the thread is and the dimensions of the adjuster nut?

If I can't find mine I may be able to get a mate to make me one.

Would this be any good to you.

Spares or repairs on eBay 300336336220

I know it is not the same as yours but the adjuster may be the same.

Mick
Mick,

I'd forgotten about this and when I went back to it, it had been sold.

Somebody paid £16 inc. postage for a Record 311 shoulder plane in 3 pieces!

Oh well, the search for an adjuster goes on! :?
