I have just finished a pen holder for my daughter but left it over night in the lean-to to be polishing to day.
I looked at it and it had 3 splits down the side, is this because of the change in the temp over night do you think.
The wood was sycamore, well I did not give up.
I set to and did another one but in Pau Amarello wood, I have put this one in the spare room in the house.

More likely that the wood was not dry enough and the loss of moisture overnight caused the problem.

I think you may be right but I did get it from a specalist wood firm in Sumerset.
It gets very hot and cold in my lean-to, I don't think that helped.
My second attempt worked out better than the first and I have to make one more for paint brushes for an artist, so someone likes it.
Just need more time to do all the things I like to do.

That may well be what caused it. Try putting freshly turned items somewhere cool for a few days - under the stairs is a good place if you have a cupboard there.

It just gives them a little time to settle after turning and to release some of the inner stress.
