Want to try an experiemnt using an mp3.
I am completely ignorant regarding mp3, can anyone please direct me to a link where I can download a free mp3 player that records in addition to play facility.

how do you mean record? Convert to mp3 from a cd (rip) or record sounds from your soundcard to mp3. (like internet radio or from a microphone)

To play Mp3 you can use the media player (windows media player) that comes with XP, and I think you can rip with it too. I am not a fan of it so I don't use it. It is free.

For playing mp3 I like to use Winamp (http://www.winamp.com)

For ripping CD I like to use freerip (http://www.mgshareware.com/frmmain.shtml) and EAC is excellent too (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/)

And for recording from a sound card, if you have nero, you can use a programme that comes with that called Wave Editor. Or have a search for a freeware prog like http://www.mp3mymp3.com/mp3_my_mp3_recorder.html or similar ;)

Hope helpful

Hi DW,
Errrm....
The term mp3 player does not really mean a piece of software you can download, it is a physical device which plays mp3's (which are files).

Any media player on your PC (like WinAmp or RealPlayer) will play mp3's (and in that sense they are mp3 players), but the term is usually used to mean one of these little toys.

There are really two mains types - iPod by Apple, and the rest.

This is just the first site that came up in a google search:
http://www.techsplosion.co.uk/index.php ... &cPath=179

If you do mean you want to play mp3's on your PC, then I believe you should be able to do that with Windows Media Player, which comes as part of Windows, and you shouldn't need anything else unless you want something fancier. I use WinAmp, myself, and while it is slow to load, I do like the interface.

I hope this helps.
Cheers
Steve

Thanks for info above.

This is what I want to do.

Play my Yamaha keyboard either with line out to the PC and make it an MP3 file or record and save as a midi file (which I know how to do ) but then make it an mp3 file.

Then I want to entertain you lot with some good old 60's music which you could download from my web site (saved as an mp3 file) so you could be entertained using your quicktime or WMPlayer.

Audacity available from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ would be my recomendation. You will also need to install the lame mp3 encoder from the same page. Theres a wee learning curve but well worth the effort. Hope that helps.

Audacity will allow you to record in its own format and then save that as any other that you require. No need to loop it out and back through the soundcard just open the file re encode it and save again.

DW

If I understand you correctly you are able to record midi output to your PC and save as a midi file,,correct?
Your problem is converting a midi to mp3?
If this is the question, then you need to connect your soundcard output to line in on the sound card (they often come with a 3.5mm jack to jack) play the file at the same time as recording with whatever record software you use, probably as a wav and then convert to mp3.

Cheers Alan

OK Alan.
I can convert to WAV file with my music software (BIAB) but then how can I make the mp3 file, or do I need something like audacity as mentioned above?

I am assuming the mp3 file will be a lot smaller than WAV?

DW

re reading MR's post suggests your answer lies in that software, I just wasn't quite sure what question you were asking, and yes mp3's are smaller a typical song being about 6meg depending on compression. there is another thought though, if your files are midi files why not leave them that way as they will be much smaller and most players will play a midi file anyway.

Cheers Alan

You could also do a google search for"free wav to mp3" this will bring up any number of bits of software some of which may be a little easier for your purposes.
