Rob, I suspect Pete relieved the inside corners as can be seen at the bottom, here.

I seem to remeber Scrit saying that the outside faces should never be lapped (apart from to remove a wire edge from sharpening) as it can cause the chisel to stick in the mortice.
 
You're right about the lapping. But having a slight taper on the chisel would help to prevent it from jamming in a deep cut (aren't Japanese chisels designed like this anyway?).

As for working on the inside of a chisel, apparently it's worth filing out the inside corners with a small file.
