After I had finished the garage doors as far as I could I made a start on the gates to go with them. Again these are in softwood but are an open style with no diagonal bracing, (Should be interesting) They are quite small in width but around 6' high. I started by cutting the rails to length and cutting the tennons on them.

Next I marked out the positions for the vertical slats that will sit in the middle.

Then it was on to the morticer to cut all of the mortices in which the slats will fit.

That was all I managed to get done today but it was a start. I will not be able to get anything done in the shop tomorrow as I will be fitting the hardwood gates......hopefully.

I love this sort of job, I don't know why exactly, I think it may be the sudden transformation you get from just a pile of bits to a gate, or the franticness of having to glue multiple components simultaniously, I havent had much work like that for a few years, it does remind me of an up & over garage door I made, one of the few projects I rememberd to take WIP Pics, I will post them.

I am looking forward to seeing the next stages Mailee.

Yes Roger, I am going to rely on draw boring the tennons and good fitting tennons on the slats and the good quality of modern glues. Well fingers crossed anyway.

Thanks Roger. I managed to get some more work on the gates done today. I started by cutting the mortices in the stiles and cutting a chamfer on the rails.

I also rounded over the top of the top rail and cut the spells to length and then tried a dry fit.

I didn't fit all of the spells in, I just wanted to make sure it would all go together easily ready for the glue up. ;)

Thanks Roger. I got the gates finished today and ready for fitting.

I decided to dowel all of the spells just to give it a bit more rigidity with having no diagonal bracing.

Won't get around to fitting them until late next week as I have more work on this week. :D

Very nice
Got my fingers crossed about the bracing but they don't look like an overly heavy gate
And as you've dowelled them all it should be OK

Just one small smidgen of criticism ( my pet peeve) the grain is the wrong way on the second photo

Cant fault them other than that LOL

 =D> =D>

=D> VERYGOOD Mailee =D>
I like them, and a decent Tee Hinge about half the width of each gate will prevent any sagging in years to come.

Can I ask why you chose to make the end gaps between the spells and styles are smaller then the rest?

What sort of finish are you going to use?

Roger how can you tell by only seeing the top 6" of the spell, the majority of the grain may well be pointing up on the rest of it, and doesn't matter if there going to be painted. (I too am a sticlker for grain direction) but on crown cut pine I often find it to be very symmetrical especially on long & narrow sections, and can't usually choose to cut the lengths with pointy grain at both ends

I spaced them out to make sure a hand couldn't reach through to get to the lock. My customer asked for this as he wants to make sure his garden is secure?

And I thought I was the only one who liked frantic and 'under pressure' work! Maybe that's why I procrastinate. 8)

Nice job Mailee... as usual! =D>

John :)
